Hey,

I'm 16 and I'm from Ontario, Canada. I've had kidney disease since I was a wee lad. The doctor said I'm looking at dialysis within the next 5 years. However, I'm hoping to improve my health, get on some better medications, and prolong the time period. I just came on to give everyone a shout.

Cheers,

Welcome Pete! I hope we can help you keep off dialysis as long as possible! Perhaps you have
some hints too?  Either way,  :welcomesign;  we're glad to have you!

Hey Pete,  Welcome to ihatedialysis.com.  You are one of the fortunate ones to be able to prepare for the dreaded "D" word, hopefully they will have some medicine that will prevent you from ever having to dialyze but if not, just gathering information here and there along the way will make the process a whole lot easier.  Also, have you looked into your options?  Hemo, PD, Nocturnal?  There are many different options and with you being so young, you might benefit from CCPD, cycler, just another option for you.   If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask and feel free to post any questions, comments and/or concerns of your own.  Looking forward to hearing more from you...

There is a lot to learn here.  If you can put off dialysis do everything you can for yourself.  Welcome!

Hi there Pete,

I'm glad you joined us. My Son is your age and just got his drivers license. I'm in the same boat as you on the dialysis time frame according to my nephrologist 2 -6 years.

So are there any sports you like to watch or any favorite movies? We have threads with those exact questions in our off-topic section.

Feel free to browse and post often. Good luck on your journey through kidney disease. maybe you will get lucky and they'll find a cure before you need dialysis.

Welcome to our community, Pete!  You have done the pro-active thing by checking out a website like this.  We are all hoping that you will be able to avoid dialysis altogether.  However, if you do have to do it, this site is awesome when it comes to preparing you for what you will experience.  And remember, this is not professional advice, but it is from the experiences of those who have actually been there!  Sometimes that can be even more helpful.
Keep posting.  Let us know what you are going through.  This site has become a caring family, so we like to know how everyone is doing.
Welcome again.  Looking forward to hearing lots from you.

 :welcomesign;  , Pete, to the community!  Glad to have you join us!  I think it is really great that you are willing to do what it takes to preserve what kidney function you have!  Some of us here also had some forewarning, others of us were at 10% or less before we knew anything~ including what dialysis really meant.  This forum has been a blessing to so many of us here and I hope it helps you too!  Good luck and best wishes for maintaining,  Anja   :grouphug;

Welcome to the IHD family, Pete!  :welcomesign; I'm in the same boat as you - still pre-dialysis, and fighting as hard as possible to stay that way.  But when the time comes, I'll be well-prepared, thanks to this site!

Hi Pete and welcome to our site.  I just read an article about this guy who was diagnosed with CKD 20 years ago and immediately went on a vegan diet and is still not on dialysis.  So, "low" protein diet vs. "no" animal protein diet.  You might give it a try.

Hope you have many years of freedom.
