Hello, my name is Joe. I was diagnosed with CKD about 30 months ago. We fought the "stay off the machine" battled for over two years and with the help of my wife we did pretty well. But three months ago I had a third incident of going to hospital for fluid overload and we finally decided to start dialysis. I had a fistula installed over a year ago.
We are doing home dialysis with a Next Stage machine. We had a great nurse trainer but we have had multiple issue with the fistula. I have had two fistula-grams and scheduled for a third surgery to "block branches". But my wife has become a master cannulator with sharps. I have said that if I knew how much better I would fell than I did; I would have started dialysis sooner.

Having said that I still have trouble with the idea that this is the rest of my life and even worse, that I have sentenced my wife to this routine also. She has been quite a trooper through all this and it is more than i saying that I have no idea what I would do without her.

This board has been helpful. I thank the community.

Welcome, I'm glad you found the board.  I hope that once you get settled into dialysis and are able to stay out of the hospital.

Going through life tied to a chair!

Hi Vt Big Rig, and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  I'm glad you are doing better and I'm glad you appreciate your caregiver.  If you ever feel she is overwhelmed a nice bunch of fresh flowers does wonders for the soul.  I know how you feel about this life sentence because that is what it is.  Unless you can get a transplant and get some of your life back.

Welcome - Rerun, Admin.   :welcomesign;

I had to have some branches tied off so my fistula would develop - it's been working nicely for a bit over a year with no hint of trouble.  Yet.

 :welcomesign; I glad you joined us.  The only advise I have is that if you think of this as a never ending battle it will depress you, I know it did me, however I now treat each week as the task and on Friday I am complete for the week and I am happy to be done.  Next week is next weeks problem. The other thing that helps me keep my sanity is as a in clinic patient I go 3 times a week and all told spend 18 hours a week on dialysis.  That still leaves 150 hours in the week to have a real life.    I am sure your wife is happier helping with your treatment then she would be having to bury you.
