Hello, and introduction

Hi, and thanks for welcoming me here. I've been reading through some of the threads lately, and it's been quite helpful. I feel I've been pulled into a world that I know nothing about. I'm here, as the son of an 82 year old man who has been on dialysis for 3-4 years. My mother has been his caregiver during this time, and I must admit I feel a bit ashamed that I didn't know more about what he was going through until now. Oh, I knew it was no fun, and I knew he hated it, but I avoided the details. And they kind of sheltered us from it as well, the 2 of them, they're quite independent.

Moving on though, he also suffers from a bone marrow disorder for which there is no cure. He made the conscious decision to stop dialysis, and his last dialysis was 2 weeks ago. This forum has been a place that I have been coming to, to look for answers on what to expect. Actually, my first visit, I came straight from Google when searching for how long he would live. And how he would die. He's still with us, and has not yet gone into renal failure. He can't keep food down very well though, and has bouts of confusion.

Sometimes I have come here and read through the forums, and it's been comforting, and I've learned a lot. Other times, it's been quite upsetting. But what you do here is awesome. What you do for each other is awesome!

Welcome, Son of George. Sorry about your dad and the circumstances in which you join us here. You've come to the right place, tho. These people will help you get thru things, no matter what. I'm relatively new here but lurked for quite some time, learning what I wanted and needed to know and I've even been perked up on a down day. So this IS the place to come.

I've been caring for my mum for years... It's not easy, but it's rewarding!.... The fact that he had stopped dialysis is an extra strain for you and your mum...

Hope things settle down with your dad, and he eases gently from his illness...

Thinking of, and praying for you.... I'm going through similar with my mum, so I fully understand your situation....

Yep, we tell it how it is ... real people with real feelings! 

Hi Son of George. Thank you for taking the time to post your message.  I'm glad that we may have been able to offer you some comfort over the last couple of weeks.  Thinking of your dad (and mum) as they go through this.
