I am in SC, and I filed for disability in Jan 2014. Does anyone have any ideas as to how long it will take for them to start paying me? I am a single mother of 2 with no income & I am not sure how much longer I can make it with no income? I know it takes time, just curious if anyone has a general idea of how long? Thank you.

My husband applied in Sept. and got his first check in March. You have to be disabled for 5 continuous months and you get the check the 6th month.

Thank you all for your input. I originally applied in Jan 2013 & was denied twice, hired a lawyer & they are fighting to get back pay.  :thx;

If you are on dialysis, you should not be denied. From what I understand, someone on dialysis meets the "disabled" qualifications. I applied for disability before I started dialysis and was denied after about three to six months of paperwork, waiting, and responding to more required paperwork. I was denied after applying the first time (before starting dialysis). During this time my kidney was failing and I was becoming sicker and sicker. Like you, I also hired an attorney, and the firm for which this attorney worked was able to get me disability approval about a month or two after starting dialysis. The whole process took about a year. It was a very frustrating time as I'm sure you can understand firsthand.

I think it depends a lot on what state you live in. In Florida it is really hard to get on disability... unless you are in renal failure, then it's automatic. I applied in Dec 2013, stopped working completely in Jan 2014, was approved in Mar 2014, but I was told I wouldn't get a check until August.

I've been lucky with savings and blessed with the help of Church and family. I don't know how a normal person would survive 8 months with no income.
