Kids and Cell Phones

What are you going to use GPS for?  Seems completely unnecessary. 

How about when your child is missing (i.e. kidnapped or ran away) and luckily they have that cell phone in their backpack.  I wish I had GPS on my cell phone.

I would like to share my experience with giving a 14 year old a cell phone.   We drilled my 14 year old Goddaughter, Li'l Susie, for 6 months (before she graduated from 8th grade)  we drilled her on how to NOT exceed minutes, NOT to give her number out to too many people, NOT to use it during the day, OH and let me tell you, before we purchased the phone she was drilled even more, so, we figured she was ready, YAH RIGHT, so we thought,  our bill for 3 phones ran roughly around $130.00 a month, we had that for for almost 2 years UNTIL we bought our precious Li'l Susie her phone,  our first bill with her phone was $1,647.00  yep yep,  she used that phone almost every minute of every day, so, if your going to get a kid a phone prepare yourselves cuz no matter how much you tell them, THEY DONT LISTEN.....   

Goofynina, Is it fair to say Li'l Susie no longer has a phone? How did she help to pay it off? I think I would have keeled over opening that bill!

Restricted phones are now available, but they didn't used to be available. What goofynina is not telling you is she was "lil Susie" yup.

You better believe her phone was confiscated with a quickness, it took almost a year for her to pay us back but she did, to this day she still has NO PHONE!!!  Kids, aye yi yi...

Wow Susie!!! That must of been a shocking bill to open!! Luckily now they have restricted cell phones for kids with prepaids minutes on them and times when they can't dial out and they can only dial mom or dad or another family member... too bad they didn't have this kind then!!

A GPS is also handy for when your teenager isn't exactly honest when telling you where she is!!   Learned this the hard way.

   Well you know what, if we need have some sort of tracking system, the thousands of children who go missing every year (either by running away or kidnapping) would easily be found.  But I guess that's not THAT important, right?

You know what I do know(since I seem to be under attack here)?  I know life can be cruel and many things happen that are beyond our controll.  It's called life!!!!!!!!  Hey I got an idea...Lets bring back Prohibition.  We wouldn't have to worry about sensless road killings and everyone in this country (US) would be a little bit safer.  Oh...wait....I almost forgot.  I used to like a drink now and then and no way on gods green earth would I have a tracking system in me regardless of any benefit.  I mean what are you talking about???  What is this thread about?  I gave my opinion and thats all.

I'm sorry if you are feeling attacked.  I think we are just debating the merits of a child having a cell phone.   

You're talking about a microchip like pets get, I'm talking about a cell phone that has GPS on it.  Would it prevent all cases of missing children - no way.  Could it help?  Probably.  Did you read about that boy who was abducted from his bus stop?  If he had a GPS cell phone, they probably would have found him right away.  And that Boy Scout that got lost on a camping trip.  He might not have had to wander around in the woods for 4 days.

I was just talking to a friend about this and yes he was out of line but having a 13yr old sister who never returns our dad's call's i know he has gotten upset with her also. The only time she calls is when she needs an extra 500$ for soccer, her mom (we have diffrent mom's thank god) spends her child support checks on herself. My dad was at the Mayo last year for 6 months fighting for his life and they never called to check up on him or anything. So i can see both sides, but leaking the call to the media was so wrong.

Absolutely right, especially since all parties are under a gag order.  He should not have used the bad language he did (which he has admitted), and shouldn't have called her negative things, but there's more to this story, and we don't know the details . . . . nor should we, in my view!  This is private conflict and pain.
