I am not on dialysis and actually know very little about it. I am here to learn what I can to help my father. He is 82 years old and has been on dialysis for several years. He is also an insulin dependent diabetic. Since he was taken off of at treatments, and must now go to a center, he has been having terrible side effects after each treatment. If these side effects can not be alleviated I'm afraid he may just stop going.

Welcome to IHD moundtown,

Sorry to hear about your Dad. You have found the best place to be for learning about the disease, it's treatments and the effects and outcome of treatments. If your Dad needs dialysis it may actually help the diabetes control.

I'm glad you found IHD we are glad to have you here.

Welcome to the board,

Please feel free to ask anything you want in order to learn more. There always seems to be at least one person who knows an answer to a question.

Welcome to our community.  this is just the place for you to be.  You will get answers from people who are actually going through the same thing as your father.   I am always particularly appreciative when loved ones join our site to be able to help the one suffering. We have developed quite a family here.  Hope hear much from you.  Ask questions, vent when you need to.  And also, we have a caregivers section when you want to deal with that aspect particularly.  Welcome again. Here is a group hug from all of us. :grouphug;

Hi Rolando,

He goes for dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours each time. After each treatment, and the next day, he feels dizzy and so tired that he does not want to get out of bed. By the time he starts to feel better, it's time for another treatment.

Dizzy and wiped out might be as simple as low blood pressure. They might be removing too much fluid. If so, there may be other symptoms - nausea, cramping. It sounds like your father and possibly you as a caregiver might be able to recognize this and let the dialysis staff know. Are you new to in-center dialysis? They will act godlike and insist upon reaching your dry weight (or whatever weight marker they choose). Remember that your dad and you have the ultimate say. If you are not comfortable with telling the dialysis staff what to do, get your nephrologist involved.

It's very possible that low blood pressure is the problem. I have heard him mention that it is usually very low after dialysis. I am new to dialysis in general. I would have no problem with telling the staff what to do if I was sure I knew what was right. I'm going to have to educate myself about this.

Welcome to the group!
There is an entire section devoted to caregivers.   A lot of question can be answered by reading the boards.
