My living donor transplant chain fell through earlier this month after I was determined to be much leas compatible than originally thought.  The surgeon thought I would have a 30% chance of acute rejection right off the bat.  We were very disappointed, but trusted the surgeon.  He was going to continue looking, but my 99.99% sensitivity was going to be hard to match.

At noon on Thursday, I received a call from the transplant coordinator at my local hospital.  They had been offered a zero mismatch kidney for me!  I was #1 in the country for it.  After numerous delays that had everyone nervous, I was finally whisked to the OR at 1 pm on Saturday.  The kidney had been without blood for 22 hours but perked up right away.  It's making tons of urine and my creatinine is dropping (it was 2.48 last night).  I am so excited!  I cannot believe I'm not dreaming! 

It is a wonderful miracle!

March 2007 - Brother diagnosed with ESRD, started dialysis 3 days later
April 2007 - Myself and sister also diagnosed with Senior-Loken Syndrome (Juvenile Nephronophthisis and Retintis Pigmentosa)

Since then, I've tried PD three times unsuccessfully, done In-Center hemo, NxStage short daily, Nocturnal NxStage, and had two transplants.  Currently doing NxStage short daily while waiting for a third transplant.

Married Sept. 2011 to my wonderful husband, James, who jumped into NxStage training only 51 days after our wedding!

1982 - born with one imperfect kidney and no bladder, parents told i would not survive
1984 - urostomy op
1990 - bladder built out of colon
2007 - birth of son, gfr fall from 3O to 26
July2011 - birth of prem daughter, gfr 17%
August2011 - gfr drop to 10%
29th May2012 - RECEIVED KIDNEY 4/6 match from my wonderful dad !

I am a caregiver to my wonderful husband,  He is 4p and started PD October 2013. We have several living donors waiting to be tested for a transplant. Dialysis is a bridge to get us where we need to go. 
He had a transplant in November 2019.

PKD diagnosis at 17
Cancer May 2011, surgery and no further treatment but placed on 2 year wait for transplant
October 2011 first fistula in left wrist
April 2012 second fistula in upper arm, disconnect of wrist
January 2013, stage 5 ESRD
March 2013 training with NxStage home hemo
April 2013 at home with NxStage
April 2013 fistula revision to reduce flow
May 2013 advised to have double nephrectomy, liver cyst ablation and hernia repair. Awaiting insurance approval to begin transplant testing. Surgery in June.
June 2013 bilateral nephrectomy.
August 2013 finishing testing for transplant, 4 potential donors being tissue typed.
January 2014 husband approved to donate kidney for me
March 4th 2014 received transplant from awesome hubby. Named the new bean FK (fat kidney) lol!  So far we are doing great!

This morning my creatinine was 1.2 - 3 days after the transplant!  It's putting out plenty of urine and phosphorus is in the 2 range!  It is going really good!  I should go home on Thursday.

Great numbers! When you go home just take good care of yourself. It'll be great. Keep a pillow with you for car rides for a while to hold against your incision. And the pillow is handy for coughing or sneezing too. Enjoy eating and drinking!

 :bandance; What wonderful news! you and James must be over the moon! I'm happy to hear your new kidney woke up ready to work right away. Remember to be kind to yourself when you get home, don't try to do too much too soon.

Well, I'm still in the hospital as my potassium level is 6.1.  Prograf and Bactrim are causing it to rise.  My phosphorus is an excellent 2.1 though!  They want me to eat cheese!

My new kidney is ridiculously happy with a creatinine of 0.7!

So it's disappointing that I have to spend more time in the hospital and they're shoving all kinds of nasty stuff up and down me to lower my potassium, but overall it's going well.  I hope to go home tomorrow and sleep in my own bed.

A tx patient is given Bactrim to prevent a particular kind of pneumonia.  I am allergic to Bactrim, so for six months, I had to have a pentamidine inhalation treatment once a month.  If all else fails, maybe your docs will consider stopping the Bactrim and putting you on the inhalation protocol.
