Man dies during dialysis, family sues Medical Center

The family of the late Ernest Edwards Jr. have filed suit against two companies and one nurse, alleging they allowed their benefactor to die during dialysis.

Representing Edwards’ estate, Jeanette Edwards filed the suit against Renal Ventures Management, the Medical Center of Southeast Texas and Marian Moore on Nov. 7 in Jefferson County District Court. dialysis 12

According to the lawsuit, on March 25 through April 4 Edwards, admitted for pneumonia, was a patient at the Medical Center.

On April 4, 2012, the day Edwards was to be discharged, he underwent dialysis at a lab operated by Renal Ventures. Moore had the responsibility of monitoring him.

During the procedure, the dialysis catheter became disconnected and pumped Edward’s blood onto the bed and floor, causing him to undergo cardiopulmonary arrest and die from severe blood loss, the suit states.

The suit accuses the defendants of falling below the standard of care.

The plaintiffs are suing for both punitive and exemplary damages.

Orange attorney David Dies of Dies & Parkhurst LLP represents them.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court, is assigned to the case.

Very sad situation. I hope the family gets to the bottom of it. Unreal!

Did it say how old the patient was.  Just visualising the old guy pulling it out.  We all know they don't sit right with us every second.

I wonder if they were using "hemo-clips". They tend to prevent easy disconnection of the lines from the access.  We use them at home both when we used a catheter and now with the fistula. They add an extra layer of protection to accidental disconnects which definatly can be quickly fatal.
When we were in the hospital here they used them also.
Are the rest of you out there using them in clinics and at home?

obsidianom , In the Uk we use some thing called a Connection shield, you clip it around the connection. Works well.
