What's past is prologue

I went for my firs t(in a long while) little dog walk in the woods, after being taken out for breakfast, and stupidly managed to put foot in a pothole and twist ankle and fall over.
Now have a mildly but painful sprained ankle Duh!!!!!
D'oh! Hope you've recovered by now, Sugar!

Don't think we're doing much of anything this weekend, except of course the usual Easter Bunny visit. I have booked off Monday and I think it's a holiday for Gwyn, so we get 3 days of downtime. Yay!

We went to the west side of the state of Washington to see the beautiful Skagit Valley Tulips.  This is a crop and they harvest the bulbs.  They can only plant a crop of Tulips in a field once every six years.  Eye Candy!

Those tulips are so pretty, Rerun!

Tonight I'm going to see some racing dogs, whilst belatedly celebrating my MiLs sixty-fifth birthday. Tomorrow night I'm meeting up with some really dodgy people, in a restaurant.

Dyl has a school assignment that I think is brilliant - recreating a famous painting (of his choice) in real life, then bringing a photograph of the scene in to school.

He wanted to do Lobster Telephone by Salvador Dali (he remember this from over a year ago!), but I informed him that this was a Dadaist piece in 3 dimensions, not a painting.

So instead he has chosen Diego Rivera's The Flower Carrier. Aidan and I were discussing this work for a massive art project that Aidan has due soon, and Dyl is always listening, even when he doesn't appear to be. It's a very American choice and I love it.

We have a white wicker laundry hamper that will work perfectly as the oversized basket, we have a load of pink flowers in bloom that we can hopefully tape over a stuffed bin liner to recreate the look of the abundance of perfect flowers, we have a large piece of canvas to tie the basket to Dyl's back, I'm sure I can find a red dress with some sort of white shawl in my wardrobe, and Dyl has white thermals if we cannot find some sort of cream coloured shirt/trousers combination. If the weather cooperates (and I think it will) we will take our photographs against the privet hedge in our back garden this weekend.

I will be performing a lovely wedding Saturday afternoon. I hope to get some shopping in before that (and with luck a spot of gardening!). On Sunday I'll be attending a lecture in the morning, followed by lunch with a group of friends. Sunday afternoon I'm going to kick back.

I'm spending tomorrow with my Mummy and we shall be partaking of tea and cake and a spot of charity shop shopping.  On Sunday we're off to the footie to see our team lose in style and not get promoted. Monday (May Day Bank Holiday ... no work ... yay!) shall be spent lounging around, I expect.  Or maybe I can convince Blokey to take me to the antique fair.  We might go to the cinema this weekend. We might not.

What wonderful, imaginative assignments ... great school!
Thanks, Sugar. My child is happy there and is learning, so that's really all I ask.

We have all the costuming together and the 'flowers' made, so now Gwyn is sewing them on to the green gingham laundry bag - a much better idea than using tape to secure them, especially as we have to take the photo outside and it's cold, wet and windy right now. We will hopefully get lucky enough with the weather tomorrow that we can take our snaps and be done.

Now that my boys' football and rugby are mostly over for the season,  we have reclaimed our weekends and can do a wider variety of activities. We're seeing Frozen tomorrow morning as none of us has seen it yet and it's going to be at the £2 cinema (although it will be nearly £4 since it's 3D). There is also a final Liverpool match on tomorrow and we have a few free Sky sports days to use up before August. Both boys claim to barrack for Liverpool (don't ask, no idea!) so we'll be spending our afternoon with that on the telly.

This morning the boys had their first riding lessons. £35 per kid. Yeeouch! And they loved it and want to keep up with it. Double yeeouch!

Another wedding to perform today. At the rehearsal dinner last night we met the aunt and uncle of the bride who both went to the college where my dad was the comptroller. Plus, she did her student teaching in my high school while I was a student there. What a small world. I lived in a VERY small town, so this is quite a coincidence!

It is rainy today, so I'm glad the bride and groom have a Plan B. We practiced that contingency, so everything is good to go.

I visit with my bed-ridden nursing home inhabitant father every day that I can. He looks forward to those visits as he has reached the point where he cannot even hold a book (or Kindle) to read. Tomorrow evening we have a book club to attend (followed by dinner out).

I can't complain. Life is pretty good.

Sounds like things are going well for you, too, Cariad!

What's past is prologue

« Reply #149 on: May 12, 2014, 02:02:14 AM »

I know Monday morning is probably a depressing time to talk about the weekend, but it looks like I'll be working Saturday, so I'm moaning about it now when I have the chance!

I should be flattered, and I guess there is a bit of that, but I really need my two day break. This was supposed to be a 3-day a week job, I am grateful for the extra hours, but I feel like 20 is my limit with all of the cleaning and kids activities and house renovation we are facing. I have been told I am 'efficient' (yes, I get that a lot) and when I told a young colleague that I had to pull the Little Miss Sunshine act out of my hat each day, she said 'but it seems to come so naturally to you!' which I took as a compliment. Still, I know I have a decent handle on hospitality, but in the end it just isn't where my passion lies, and it is exhausting. The owner has said he'll try to find someone else to work that shift, but he said that about the bank holiday last Monday, and I truly suspect he is being less than honest about his attempts to fill the slot. I think he prefers to have me working these shifts because he trusts me to put forth my best effort at all times - he would never say that, and I don't need to hear it. He has been dropping little compliments my way as of late, making a habit of relaying nice comments people have made about me or my work, probably more because I always do the same for him. I *always* pass on compliments about the food, atmosphere, or anything else to anyone that I feel should hear it because I feel we all get far too little of that in an average day.

I did get my first (good) review on TripAdvisor. It really didn't say anything about me specifically, but I remember the family, so I know it was me who took the order and talked with them, so I am giving myself a bit of credit. I just want to get through this job without reading something like "And there's a horrible American who works there...." I shouldn't read TripAdvisor. I know the owner hates being reviewed with a passion even though the restaurant gets overwhelmingly positive remarks.
