Hi yall.  I am an acute nurse and have been doing dialysis since 1988.

Just wanted to know what we can do in the acute setting to make life easier and more pleasant for yall while in the hospital.

Any suggestions?

Yall are funny!

I work in the hospital...doing the dialysis treatments for in-patients.  Patients that are IN the hospital.  We are referred as 'acute' meaning short term.   Chronic...meaning long term is where yall all go for your 3 day a week treatments.  I have done that as well but started doing in-patient (acute) for about 4 years now.

This is a cool website.

Talk to the patients and explain what is happeneing.  Often we have little or no information when we start dialysis and need to know things.  Don't just sit in the room and ignore the patient and watch the machines.

:welcomesign; please treat patients the way YOU would like to be treated. People don't choose to be in a hospital...they have to. Sometimes, just by looking into the patient's eyes will make us feel better.
A bit of sense of humor works also!

Oh you can just tell Rachel is CUTE... specially with that southern drawl I imagine... mmmmm yall!

Anyway yes I think explaining what is going on to patients who ask.. specially if they have just been thrust into a life changing situation with little/no warning - they will want to know (maybe) what is going on. I know when I see some acute (ok, in) patients in my unit sometimes they have no idea what is going on with dialysis and need some TLC to understand.

Above all, I think, try to listen to your patients and where they are at and how they feel... specially if it is all new and scary for them.. I am sure you do anyway!

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Wow, dialysis for 17 yrs and still going.  No transplant soon.  I was on dialysis for 4.5 yrs but it felt like century with many problems.
