G'day fellow sufferers.

Yep, I'm now another statistic to add the renal failure list.  I am a 67 Australian, living in a rural community about a 1 hour drive from from a largish city called Toowoomba, in Queensland.

It is very early days and I am short on detail knowing only that my kidneys are not good, and its only a matter of time before I join the many thousands who rely on dialysis for survival.  It does seem that a childhood bout of TB may have affected the organs, as I have not been troubled by the most common forms of illness that lead to kidney failure.

I live on a 40 acre lifestyle property, in splendid isolation, and kidney failure is not what I ever expected. Just whether this illness will affect my present lifestyle is pretty much a foregone conclusion, but I am encouraged by information that one can have a home dialysis machine that would be really good for me I think.

As is the case for all newcomers, there'll be plenty of questions so keep a look out for me in the various threads.

 :welcomesign; Howdy from San Diego CA.  The land of Oz has the most colorful names for their cities, towns, villages, outback and stuff like that.  Welcome to the club that no-one really wants to have an active membership in.  This is the place for information, encouragement, and just plain 'ol friendship.  I went to a meet-up in Las Vegas a couple of years ago and got to put faces to names.  Had a grand time.  Personally, I can't give you much information or help but lots of others on here will gladly share info and answer any questions you may have.

Welcome, Retrorod!    :welcomesign;

Welcome to another Aussie - I'm from Melbourne.

Be sure to enquire about PD when things get closer to dialysis.  It's very portable and always done at home.  I hope to see more of your postings and be sure to ask questions.  There's lots of information here.

Welcome Retrorod - glad you found our community. The aussies are slowly taking this place over!!  :ausflag; :ausflag; :ausflag; :ausflag; :ausflag; :ausflag;

You are in for some degree of change for sure with your new and unwanted status but absolutely you can potentially be suitable for home dialysis hookup (they usually do require you have someone there to assist, but eeach unit is different). In the meantime I hope there are services that can assist you when it comes to dialysis and the like.

Since there are a few of us aussies on here hopefully we can help answer some of your questions and help you out on this "fun" trip.

best wishes and welcome again!

Welcome retrorod. I hope it's many, many days (years!)  before dialysis becomes necessary for you.  I love the way you describe your home - splendid isolation - sounds very peaceful and relaxing.  Of course, being a mostly a city girl I have no real concept of how big 40 acres really is, sounds huge, I'd probably go stir crazy in about a week!

I also can't visualize how large acreage is. I usually tell them to point! "Your property goes to where?"   :)

Thank you all for your welcome.

My overwhelming initial sense is one of contributors here being a friendly bunch, very willing to help the shell shocked newbie, that life may well be worth persevering with after all.

How wonderful is this internet and the development of forums such as this one.  Thank God you are all out there, worldwide, willing to make a guy feel less anxious about a nasty kind of illness.  I know there are more serious and nasty things that people endure, and it this sense, I feel less inclined to a "woe is me attitude".

The reality is that with 67 contented and generally happy years behind me, I feel I've had a good innings and that kidney failure is not a bad way to go, compared to some other wretched illnesses.  Thanks again.  RR
