I have some things to say about kids and MySpace that I have been meaning to post for awhile. About a month ago, my 16 year old son got into some trouble, so I decided I needed to do a little "digging" and had him give me his password to his MySpace. OMG...it is unbelievable what some of the kids say and post on MySpace (including my own son). I am guessing that most parents do not check their kid's MySpace (I never did) because if they did, most of the stuff probably wouldn't be on there! I am pretty much talking across the board that kids put stuff out there that they would NEVER want parents to see. Of course, some are worse than others, but geez, if it's anything you wouldn't want certain people to see, why on earth would you put it on the internet??? It was QUITE eye opening, and I read some pretty vile stuff from kids I thought were "good kids" (including my own, I might add!)

I'm sure I violated some kind of space that parents are not supposed to go (according to what the kids think). They seem to think their page is like their personal diary, but HELLO! do they not realize that what they put out there can be read by thousands, if not millions, of people and the photos become public domain once they are out there?

I realize that you have the option to set your page to "private", so others cannot access your page unless they are invited. However, I was amazed how easily I could access literally thousands of kids through my son's page by clicking on friends of friends of friends of friends.....I couldn't neccesarily leave them a message, but I could read their profiles, look at their photos, read their blogs, read messages that were sent, etc.

I challenge any of you that have kids with MySpace accounts (you may not even know they have one!) to check out what they and their friends are putting out there.

And I didn't even get into the pedophile/sex offender aspects of this pandora's box!

The internet is awesome...and scary!

I consider this site "my space" and I wouldn't want my family reading this.  These are my feelings about dialysis which they wouldn't understand.  But, I can type what I feel on this site and leave it here.  A lot healthier for my well being.  I like having "My Space.'

I have monitored my kids myspace from day one. I told them, if you'd be ashamed to wear a shirt with words printed on the front like what you're writing on myspace, then don't write it. I read stuff other kids write and it is all over the map. That's why I have a myspace, and my kids are not allowed to block me. Of course, some kids get around that by opening another page, so you really have to check the history. Even so, Jill's got it right, the internet is wonderful and scary too!

I have never let my parents read my blogs or anything, not that I have anything to hide, but I just like my personal space and thats what it is to me. When my kids get old enough to use the internet, they will be monitored during their teenage years and I have all the programs to do it already, lol.

Oh I also wanted to add that I was a pretty good kid, had a personal diary under my bed that would have curled my mom's already natural curly hair even more if she had read it. I also passed notes in school, some were probably REALLY inappropriate. Also had lots of phone activity as a teen, prank calls and other stuff that was probably over the top. We didn't have the internet, but we took risks, hitch hiking, open parties, driving around with liquor in some guys car, all this without parental supervision or permission. My mom thought I was at the school dance. My point is, I turned out ok. I did alright in school. I never got in much trouble (or got caught, I guess.) This is probably why I am more aware of what my kids could be doing. I hope they will turn out ok too.

Good luck with those "programs" if a kid is savvy enough, there are several ways around EVERY program out there. Trust me! the best thing you can do is limit the usage and keep the computer in a high traffic area where you will be able to monitor at all times. The Internet can be a very valuable resource or it can be a nightmare for a parent.

You are right that's why I don't let him get on anymore. I think his account has been deleted but I will have to look. Fortunately when he first opened his account I told him only if i know the password. So I would periodically go in and the crap just got worse and worse so I locked it so he can't get in anymore.
