What is the UF in the Baxter machine for?

I used to have -ve number with the UF and now, it seems that UF is increasing.

What is UF used to measure? What does it mean when the number is high (>1000)?

I think the UF is the ultrafiltration. It is the total fluid removal during the cycler. If its more then 1000 you are taking off a good amount of fluid.

Yes, UF is ultrafiltration which is the amount of fluid that has been pulled off during dialysis.  If you drink a lot, then you may want to pull off more.   Did your training team go over this with you?  They should have as it an important factor in your treatment.

The ultrafiltration (UF) reading is the fluid you take off in excess of the dialysate you put in. If you fill with 2L and drain 2500ML then your UF will be 500ML and you'll have taken off roughly a pound of excess fluid. The stronger the dextrose the more UF you can expect to see, provided you have the liquid to take off.

Great question. I am also on the Baxter cycler and the UF did not come up in training. Just numbers I am to chart.  I seldom have a high number and even get a negative number. My cycler alarmed every time as it was set at 350. Nurse lowered it to 250.(Still alarms) I will only re-try four times then I bypass even if it is negative.  So what is the negative?  My nurse did not explain just reset me to 250.  I still make urine and not fluid restricked. IHD is a great site and always good questions being bounced around.  More info here than anywhere else. And from people to experience it.

A negative UF means you did not drain out the amount you filled with. Example, you fill with 2500 and after the dwell you drain 2000 of the 2300 you filled with and that would give you a UF of -500.

I'm on the Liberty and have negative UF quite a bit.  My nurse tells me that I am dehydrated .  I also get leg cramps often.  I use one green bag and two yellows.  It seems that I sweat a lot too and have a water jug by my bed to take a slug of it when I get up to go to the bathroom.  Of course being in Texas is enough to make anybody sweat.....!!!

I''m kind of surprised that the UF values did not come up in your training. My team went over every aspect of my cycler and all of the readings I would see. If I get a negative UF during my cycle time, it just tells me that I will have more of a drain when I do my manual in the morning. Overall, my drain for 24 hours runs between 1.4 and 1.6.
