OAK HARBOR, Wash. - The mayor of this Whidbey Island town is about to give the gift of life to a perfect stranger in British Columbia.
And now, two men who've never met - are about to be connected forever.
First-term Mayor Scott Dudley is about to become a first-time organ donor. And he quickly became the talk of the town after word got out he's donating one of his kidneys to Bill Rosario of Canada.
"Tomorrow we go in for a pre-op appointment, and that will be the first time I get to meet him," Dudley says.
"People like him should be recognized," says Resario. "Scott to me is a hero, and I will pay it forward for him, I know I will."
Dudley made the decision after hearing Rosario's wife give a passionate speech at the Rotary Club where he is a member.
The well-known motto - "Service Above Self" - is what he lives by.
Everyone in City Hall and in the community were pretty impressed by his generosity.
Dudley just needs some last-minute blood work before the big transplant on Monday. Rosario is also at the hospital - his kidney at 13 percent capacity.
"It still hasn't sunk in. I am incredibly blessed and thankful," says Rosario.
Dudley says, "There's a lot of us that have two great working kidneys, and we can be without one and help someone else live a long and healthy life."
