My name is Ashley (I go by Ash most often), I am 26 and I live in Phoenix, Arizona with my boyfriend (41) who just started dialysis a few weeks ago.

They think his issues started a while back. He caught my cold around March 12th. On March 20th, he asked me to  take him to the emergency room, which was odd for him. Knowing how odd it was, I knew something was up so we hopped in the car and went. When we got there, he was severely dehydrated, was seeing red and was short of breath.

They originally diagnosed it as COPD and pneumonia, later discovering the kidney failure. Through much investigation and testing, they found that he had influenza-a.  They concluded that since his immune system was already down, his kidneys couldnt keep up or were already down but the flu took them out all of the way.

The biopsy showed tubular necrosis and minimal scarring.

So far, he is still acute his creatnin is dropping a little at a time.  His renal specialist said that he is giving the kidneys a Max time of six months to come back, before declaring them chronic.

There are so many questions the people at the dialysis place haven't been able to answer for us that I have found the answers for, here. Some are still out in the air and being from a forum world, I know we will find ththe answers we need here.

Welcome, Ash!  So glad you found your way here. You will find that the good people here will be happy to give you the benefit of their experience, so ask anything that's on your mind.  You can also come here for support or for a hearty laugh or two.  In the meantime, there still seems to be a chance that your BF's kidney function will come back, so let's hope for that too.  All the best to you both.

They said that in most cases like this, there is an 80% chance of recovery, but no promises.

Right now we are both sticking to the renal diet. I don't want him to do this alone, since I also know what dieting by yourself is like, lol. They gave him a 15oz protein limit per day, so we usually do tilapia, chicken or lean steak. Usually, lighter meats in the day and beef at night, sometimes chicken. Tonight is steak with green beans and rice.

I will be around later to ask some snack and food questions, too!  :waving;

Glad you found us, Ash!

The kidneys are amazing things and I hope your BF's start working again. It CAN happen in acute cases like his. In the meantime, good for you on the renal diet.

Welcome Ash...Sorry you had to join us...It does sound like you are the rock any guy would hope for in his situation.  Keep coming around, strength in numbers

(One quick question, what is the avatar of, me thinking it looks like a mercat??)  He is cool looking tho

 :welcomesign; Ash.  Sounds like your beginning into the KidneyWorld was much like mine and Blokey's (he's my hubby and was on dialysis till he had a transplant last year.)

I have read and researched SO much on kidneys already and YES that ARE amazing things! Lol!!! I never knew they could regenerate their cells!!! It's amazing!

Welcome,  Ash.  Just my 2 cents worth.  I started PD early (i.e. before I was feeling really crappy) at my doctor's insistence, and after a few months my kidney function actually improved.  I think your BF has good odds for recovery.  I keep my fingers crossed.

Welcome Ash!  So glad you joined IHD.  Lots of knowledge & support here!  My husband had an uncle who had acute tubular
necrosis.  Have they determined the cause of the necrosis?  I believe, if I remember correctly (Its been a long time ago) his was due to some bad blood given to him in a hospital that caused him to have septic shock or something like that.  I don't know if he had to D or not, but he recovered from it as I recall.  Of course, he passed away many years ago.  Had a massive stroke.

The specialist from the hospital was leaning towards his kidney failure being from catching my cold. They think it mutated into the flu, then partially turned to pneumonia. They think his kidneys were already being a bit slow and this wiped them out all of the way.

The doctor said that it was fortunate that he did catch my illness because had he not, it could have progressed until he just dropped one day......

 HELLO ALL..I BOB,SO GRATEFUL FOR THIS FORUM,I DEEP IN THE DESERT OF CALIF,NEAR COLRADO RIVER,MARRIED 44 YEARS.  I LOST MY KIDNEYS LAST SUMMER TO GOOD PASTURES SYNDROME AND START NxStage training next month.

Sounds like your BF's kidney failure is acute rather than chronic and like the doctors said, he probably has an excellent chance of them recovering. Hopefully it won't be long before he's off the machine. Good luck with everything and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you two!

Yes, they did say acute a few times, too. I hope he CAN come off it and get better!
