Dialysis Now renal cancer!
«

Hi everyone, My hubby has been on dialysis now for 3 years, now we have found out he has a mass on his right kidney, and it is cancer, anyone else experience this? We are scared, we need some help. please help us know what to do and if we can survive this. I am not ready to be a widow! Please let us know your experiences, the kidney Dr, says he is high risk for surgetry, because he is on dialysis and overweight and diabetic, so what do we do.
Please any input is greatly appreciated!
Love ya all

Sweet pea,
welcome to the site. My husband is going through the same thing. He also has been on PD dialysis for about 3 years. Eight months ago he had blood in his urine, he dose not pee much so it was a surprise. He had a CT scan and it came back that they had discovered a couple of "cysts" nothing to worry about they would keep their eyes on them. He had another CT scan about two weeks ago. We have now been told that they are sure that one of them is cancerous. They say it is only small about 1.7 cm but it is classed as a balkier (I think that is what it is called) 4 cyst. They could take out his kidney but he has other health issues, his heart could not take the strain, so they will not do this. The other method is to "freeze it " key hole surgery but he would still have to have anesthetic and we would have to go to another hospital about 4 hours away.. The conclusion we have agreed to is: to watch and see. He will have another CT in six months. Apparently they do not like taking a biopsy because it could open a can of worms. They don't really like operating until it is a lot larger. Yes we are the same as you, scared. What can you do,! They tell us that they are slow growing, so fingers crossed.

Thank you so much, my hubby had a pain in his back, but he has bad issues anyway, well we have just recently started at the Va clinic, the dr there did an ultrasound, says he has 2 cysts and one Large mass, so scheduled an mri, it came back saying it is cancer, the nephrologists not a nice dr, and she already told him that he would have to see a urologist and that he was too high of a surery risk, so next Fri we go to the neph to be referred to the urologist. I have to work to full time jobs so it is hard for me, I am exhausted all the time and so my dealing with things are stressfuk, i WORK 85 HRS A WEEK. mY hubby his heart is in great shape, he does have a bad back and neurpathy bad, he is 65 years old and is a food addict by his own admission, he can not loose the weight and he does not want to give up eating, so I cannot be his food police.
Thanks for all of the input, sure hope all goes well with your hubby too, this is all so hard and no one but us gets it, if you know what I mean!

billybags, so sorry for you too. Which hospital would he have to go go?

As noted below, I am a survivor of kidney cancer twice, originally seven years ago and again this past August. I have no kidneys and am doing well on nocturnal in center hemodialysis.
If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

I really feel for you both I THOUGHT I had a health scare with the hubby and it turned out something minimal. I was freaking out I can't imagine all the questions, concerns, etc. My prayers are with you and your hubby and I sure do hope everything works out for the two of you. I understand how you feel I work full time as well and it is hard (To say the least). You have support here don't forget that talking helps! Remember he is still here and nothing is impossible!

Hi Everyone,
Ok we saw the kidney dr, and the cancer is contained within the Kidney whichis great news ! The mass is 8 cm and he also has some cysts too, so we see the urologists on March 19, the nephrologist said they will just take the kidney out, so sounds good to us! I am so relieved that it is only in the kidney
PLease keep us in your prayers and thoughts, as we will all of you!
Luv ya

Hi Sweetpea,
Back in 2008, my husband had the same issues, back ache, etc. It was totally by accident that they found the kidney cancer. The doctor pulled both kidneys and some tissue around the left kidney. Thankfully that took care of the cancer. From here in, he had to be checked every 6 months to make sure there was no recurrence of the cancer.
Sadly in his case, April of 2011, he was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer, completely out of the blue and he passed in October.
I'll keep you in my prayers that everything goes wonderfully and he recovers fast.
Hugs to you

He was not on dialysis , but he only had one kidney so after they removed it he went on dialysis. He was only in the hospital for that for about 4 days, he had a cath and then once he had completed his first couple dialysis they sent him home. He had a lot of issues going from well with full kidney function to no kidney function at all. But the surgery was not too bad, he recovered from the incision fairly quickly.

Hi Everyone,
Well here is the update, we went yesterday to the urologist at the Va clinic, well he said he could not help us, we have to go to the VA hospital in Long Beach Calif. The hospital here is not doing any surgery right now because they are building a new hospital. So we have waited 3 weeks for nothing!!!
So now we have to wait for Long Beach to contact us and we have to go now for an appt, then schedule the surgery, which will mean 2 trips there! We live in NV so its about 5 hr drive each way!. So that is the update, thanks so much for thinking of us!
