Has anyone talked with a renal dietitian about whey protein powder?   For some reason couldn't find any info on all knowing google  :bow; about the potassium and phosphorus content in it.

Before I found out I had CKD,  I used to make this really wonderful "healthy" protein bar out of it using chocolate whey protein powder, nuts, oatmeal and honey.  I would eat some after I went to the gym for a pick me up.

Pretty much I guess honey is the only safe thing for us now unless the whey protein powder is ok to use.
I do recall mentioning whey protein powder with the nutritionist, with nothing being said against using it.

My prime concern in using whey protein powder  was to get the basic amino acids in a balanced ratio.
For my given set of medical conditions, I had no immediate concerns for the potassium and phosphorus content.

My personal opinion is that if ones amino acids ratio is good, ones body will have the necessary makings to supply all the bodies protein requirements.
Raising my protein levels to get a good monthly report card from the nutritionist, showing 'within' range was what I was basically aiming for.

This is a good thread.
Thanks talker, for bringing it back up.

Protein is a very important part of our diet.  In the "old" days we were told to limit our protein intake to about 60 grams a day. Today, with more scientific research, it is now recommended that we consume about 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of weight, per day. 1kg=2.2lbs.

Here is the protein guideline from the National Kidney Foundation (NKF):
http://www.kidney.org/professionals/kdoqi/guidelines_updates/nut_a15.html

To make sure the protein is used to sustain and build muscle, calorie intake is also important.

NKF's guidelines recommend 35 calories per kilogram of weight, per day.

The key is to consume protein and calories without going over one's daily limit of Phosphorus and Potassium.  It's not easy, but it is very doable.  It takes a little time before it becomes second nature.  There's loads of information you'll find from past posts, here at IHD.

Thank you Zach    :thumbup;
Yes, times are changing the once solidly entrenched protocols for dialysis folks and protein use.
Do find that I need to really push to remember, to drink my whey protein with water, four (4) time a day.  (102 grams) My body handles it in the four dose's , no problem, just that I get so deep into some projects that I overlook the doing of  drinking the proteins.
