I know that feeling.  I met my best friend in a chat room in 2007.  Before we met, we'd chat for hours and hours, and when I got the chance to meet her, about 6 months after meeting in the chat room, I was incredibly nervous (I've no idea if she was. I should ask her sometime. *G*).  She was waiting for me at the airport.  I felt incredibly nervous and awkward around her for about 10 minutes, about the time it took us to get into a cab at LGA.  Once we were shoved into that cab together, we started to talk and all my nerves left me.  Anyone who saw us talking then would have thought we'd known each other for years, and not met for the first time only minutes before.  The internet, and facebook is included in that, kept us close together.  When I was so sick 3 years ago, with the internet, I felt like she was there in the room with me, even though I was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and she was in NYC.  I wouldn't have got through it without her.

Oh, you were better than the lobster rolls.....

and I LOVED them!  :2thumbsup;

 :cuddle;

I have a long-term goal to meet as many of my IHD/FB friends as possible. I'm just sad that I couldn't go to the meet-up in LV. It fell during a very busy time at school. Right up to the end I was trying to figure out how I could go.

But I'm thrilled that I was able to make that trip all the way to Maine.... and plan to repeat it as often as possible!  :clap;

I like the song - I Like You Better on Faceboook!
I have the reverse - a person I quite like, and a family member to boot, keeps posting strange things that are making me 'dislike' her as a person, so I've just hidden her posts. The things she puts up on FB are things I never hear her say or refer to face to face. Often they are rude or even racist. Weird!

Riki,

I actually hope to make it all the way to Newfoundland next summer.....

When my magic sled is up and running, I'll be sure to take you along on my trip to England and Ireland!  :rofl; :rofl;

Rachel, spandex is NOT very flattering to a person my age. LOL!

And Chook, I so get what you are saying. I have had to remove some very strange postings to my wall. OMG! I do not want some people's thoughts to reflect on ME! I don't like to "un-friend" folks, but I have been sorely tempted at times...

You'd probably bypass me if you were going to Newfoundland.  If you're driving, you'd go through New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to get the ferry to Newfoundland in Cape Breton.  The only thing you could do is take the bridge across to PEI in New Brunswick, then take the ferry back to Nova Scotia and continue on your way to Cape Breton.

I'm on IHD more on Facebook than I am on here. When you're in the chair for 3-4 hours, it's much easier to use the iphone. Seems like a different group on FB than here.

Hehe, I also met Aleta first from IHD in meatspace. It was interesting. It was not my first time meeting kidney folks from online in person.

I was glad I came out to Vegas to meet people. Everyone was so nice, I was glad.

The big thing with meeting folks I find from something like this, we're faced with the fact: They're not their illness.

I know that's common sense, but I guess because so many of the things here revolve around a medical condition, when we meet someone and realize they have interest, outside of illness, that we perhaps don't particularly enjoy. It's a bit overwhelming of a concept!

It's like "I agree with you about so much, relating to our illness! And I liked that post. Wait, you're a Republican?!.. you voted... for? Oh. Okay. To each it's own... uh. So... So... Do you like Tacos?"

This can be difficult in person. But, at times, more so with introductions to say Facebook and Twitter. Where, you may be getting whiffs of someone's daily life tidbits. Not just interests, but conversations among friends. And, you may be like "Wait, that person just said WHAT?! WHAT DO THEY "MEAN" BY "THAT! ?!"
And that's not always a happy realization. But, as a glass half full type of gal, I like to believe myself, I'm myself, whether, here or on Facebook. If you don't like what I have to say, don't read it. Don't be my friend on Facebook. Don't follow my tweets.

(Changes are, if you follow my twitter, you get tiny tidbits of things you may really not understand, especially if it's going back and forth between friends and inside humor is involved)

That being said, I probably stay better connected through those than here. And as long as folks don't mind. I'm happy to be friends with folks on either site. :) Friends are awesome.

Apart from the obvious souls, does anybody else from the FB ihd group ever come on to the Real ihd?  I recognise very few of them, which is why I don't post there (you know, being shy and whatnot ...)  I prefer it here than there; but then it's just a group, not a community (to me.)

And Chook, I so get what you are saying. I have had to remove some very strange postings to my wall. OMG! I do not want some people's thoughts to reflect on ME! I don't like to "un-friend" folks, but I have been sorely tempted at times...
I don't think I've ever un-friended anyone.  I know people have un-friended me but I can live with that.  I have one girl who I really should un-friend but viewing her life through her status updates is such a train-crash that I can't bear to un-friend her!  It's like watching some trashy soap opera and being desperate for the next epsiode.

Yep, I met Ladystardust before her transplant, in fact, it was just before you got listed, wasn't it?

That was really a very fast meet and greet, because I was in her city for a conference and I did not realize that I was coming down with a horrible stomach bug that had me really dragging later that day.
