WTF? Feeling like crap.

So I have been doing a combo of CCPD and CAPD for a mere two weeks. It has been going OK. But the past two to three days I have been feeling sorta crappy. I have started feeling aches in my shoulders, and frequent nausea. Plus my arm, and leg muscles feel very fatigued often.

Is this typical at the start of home dialysis?

I would call your dialysis nurse and express your concerns. Maybe some lab work is in order. It does sound like it may be Potassium related.

Is it normal to have problems while adjusting to a new form of treatment?  Yup.  But, I'm putting in a 4th vote for getting some labs done and figuring out what is going on!  Your new treatment scrip may need some tweaking.

Potassium, dehydration, anemia, low clearance, etc.   When you have kidney failure there are SO many things to make you feel CRAPPY!  It's important to describe your symptoms as thoroughly as possible, so they can test for the many possibilities.  Good luck friend!

I am taking two potassiums pills a day, maybe I need more.

My PD nurse thinks it is dehydration and told me to drink more water and use the 1.5 bags tonight in the cycler.

Hey highway61,

Nausea jumped out at me, cause it was pounded into our head over and over that nausea can be a symptom of peritonitis. Do you check your drains every day?

I also get a lot of nausea. I got a number of tests, all clear. My GI doc said just carrying around all this fluid can cause nausea just like being pregnant. I use Zofran ODT. That's the little pills that dissolve on your tongue. If PD causes nausea all you can do is deal with it. But still get your labs checked and ask your nurse for a prescription.

I have been drinking more water but still fell crappy, though a little better. I still have a lot of nausea, even lost some of my dinner from it. I have been mostly popping Tums she I feel it coming on. Happened too fast at dinner tonight.

Jeanna I will look into the Zofran.

When I got to work this morning and stepped out of my Jeep my legs felt like rubber. I was actually worried about collapsing. But it got better as the day went on and I drank more water. Still feel a little shaky.

BP was my next thought. My husband had some pretty extreme balance issues, and I was horribly worried it was wheelchair time. All it really was was too many BP meds.

did u go starit from no dialysis t oPD, bc when i first started no previous dialysis, my bp went down about 20 30 points... it could be blood pressure

If it is Peritonitis he WILL have a fever!  Check your temp!  I tend to lean more towards the dehydration.  Pulling too much off.

You nailed it lmunckin! Before leaving for our quick trip, my wife talked to our PD nurse and neph about it and they suggested we drop to 1.5/2.5 on the cycler and 1.5 on the manuals. Since then I have been feeling much better and even getting more sleep at night.

I am feeling pretty good. Of course, traveling to visit the grandkids and getting sweet kisses and hugs from them no doubt helped loads. :-)

I, too, don't have children.  Mayhaps that's why my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving.

I feel just like that when I take too much fluid off.  Next time you are wondering if you are dehydrated take your BP.  If you take it laying down and then again standing up you will see that your BP will drop and your heart rate will go up.  That indicates low fluid or dehydration.
