I've been reading the forum since I started dialysis but didn't actually sign up until recently and just realized it's a requirement to introduce myself.

I got diagnosed with ESRD this August. I am a 32 male, vegetarian, non smoking, non drinking, really healthy otherwise, from Virginia.

I just started using my fistula last week, and actually sorry to see the permacath go. I'm not sure i'll ever get used to the needles.

I'm not sure if I should say more without sounding like I talk too much about myself, so I'll stop there.

:welcomesign; bansix!  I think it's a requirement here that you MUST talk about yourself too much (but only because we're a nosey bunch) ...

Welcome, bansix!  I'm interested to know that you're a vegetarian.  I have sometimes wondered how a vegetarian manages on dialysis, given the need to restrict potassium.  How do you get sufficient protein, again without overloading on potassium?  And here you thought you would have YOUR questions answered...Anyway, all the best tou on your journey!

Hello Bansix and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you finally introduced yourself.  I still hate needles.  I guess my panic period has changed form worrying about them all the time to just the few minutes they have to go in.  Then they shouldn't hurt.  Sometimes they hurt for awhile but most the time nothing.

Questions?  Look Here.

:welcomesign; to the site bansix, sorry that you are starting to go down this road. You are only young, are there any plans for a transplant in the near future?

it is pretty hard, especially everything i used to eat is now discouraged. soy was my main source of protien, i still eat lots of tofu but stopped drinking soy milk. they said almond milk would be a better choice. which is confusing since im not supposed to have nuts..
i started eating protien bars but got tired of them. dont really like the shakes... i've wondered if i need to start eating meat, but from what ive read, its better to stay vegetarian cause theres less toxins

Try the ProCel powder. U can mix it in drinks or food. Does not really have a taste.

Hi, bansix!  Glad to hear from you.  If your albumin, potassium and phosphorus levels are normal, then I don't see why you have to change your diet.  I don't  know how almond milk compares to soy milk, nutritionally, but that's easy to find out.  Haven't tried ProCel powder, as msrosefromms recommends, but LiquiCel and ProMod, the syrupy protein supplements for dialysis patients, are made from beef collagen.  They taste as bad as that sounds...

I wondered the same thing about almond milk.  My husband's dietitian said to try rice milk.  He now uses it on cereal.  He said it is not bad.  It is found in the non refrigerated section of the grocery store, near the baking goods.
