I started dialysis in may 2011. I was diagnosed with kidney disease at 18. I came home from a summer job an found that my legs where extremely swollen and as I pressed into my skin it felt like a memory foam bed. My father rushed me to the doctors and I waited in the lobby for hours thinking my legs would stop working. They ended up admitting me which was very odd to my parents since I had been completely healthy all my life. The doctors said that my kidneys were failing, I would need a transplant, and I would be on medication for the rest of my life. For the 1st 6 Months I stayed on my low sodium diet and took my medication everyday. The kidney disease never slowed me down or gave me any signs that would let me know the gravity of OUR  unfortunate circumstances. the doctors told me that I got the disease out of "bad luck". I went back to a normal diet and took my medication here and there and in about 2 years I was forced to go on dialysis because my creatinine was too low. I choose peritoneal dialysis. The operation to put in the catheter was almost perfect until I clean the exit site 4 days after surgery with soap and a wash cloth. I caught peritonitis. Just recently all my donors which have been worked up have been declined. I would be depressed but I have transformed from the days of a neglectful teen. I want to bring awareness to the world for US with kidney problems. Eventhough I connect everynight for 10 hours I am very active still playing sports everyday, school and work. I'm Trying to to prove that you can live normally on dialysis even tho I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks :)

It is great to hear of people, particularly young people, just getting on with their lives despite (or because of!) dialysis, so continue to spread the word!  Welcome to IHD.

Do you know what caused your kidneys to fail?  "Bad luck" isn't a diagnosis. :P

I'm surprised that someone of your tender years would have so many donors declined.  Were any of them from your peer group?  On what grounds were they declined?  Are you on the waiting list for a cadaveric kidney?

So many questions!

Welcome and so young to be suffering this disease, but there are other young people on here that know exactly what you are feeling.  Please keep posting cause you could definately reach others with your story.

Again welcome & God Bless.

So glad you found us.  you seem to be very informed and doing a great job thus far.  Are you on "the list"?  Do you have any other live donors lined up?  My first three were declined, but my fourth was accepted!!   Good Luck!

Hi Antizking, and welcome to IHD.  I'm so glad you found us.  We would all love it if you could educate the world on this dreadful lifestyle and have everyone volunteer to donate a kidney.  There would be no waiting list.  It is possible....  there are 300 million people in the US and only 400 thousand on dialysis.  Keep working at it.  You are too young to deal with all this.  Sounds like you are doing well.  Stay tuned to learn all you can for people with questions.

Welcome to IHD AnitzKing!!!

You are MY kind of woman!!!!! Oh wait, people on here will take that the wrong way given my track record!!  :rofl;

What I mean is that it is so wonderful that you are making the most of your "bad luck" situation and want to bring awareness to others, but not only the "outsiders" but also to others with ESRD that you *can* live a pretty normal life and get on with it even with dialysis. This is exactly the sort of thing I've always tried to do so like I said.. you're my kind of person! I love that you've fit this in to your life but don't let it get in the way.. and at such a young age (I mean this in a nice way) to be focused on spreading the (postiive) word - there are those out there of a similar age who could learn much from the example you're obviously setting.

So, welcome to IHD! Hopefully you'll fit in well here!!
