Sean Michael's birthday

1 year ago right this minute, I was in the surgical room; about to receive the greatest gift ever.  The kidney wasn't placed into my body until after minute so the official anniversary is Sept 1st.  I have been thinking of the donor family all day.  They are marking this day too, but it isn't a happy day for them.   Looking back over the past year, I can hardly believe how much I have changed.  It still is surreal.  I have been able to go and do things I haven't done in years.   Thanks to all who kept encouraging me. All of you who held my hand in the bad times and celebrated with me on Sept 1st --- I love you all.  "Sean Michael" continues to do well. I take care of him and he takes care of me.      This has been the most humbling experience one could ever have. 

Now who's turn is it?   It was never suppose to be me ---- so I hope no one ever gives up.  God bless donors and their families.  And God bless IHD!!

I am so pleased how your year has gone.  You totally deserve every great moment you have experienced. Our post transplant experiences have been so similar I completely understand the joy of those experiences and wish you many, many more years of this.

I am thrilled for you!  A couple of tips -- I wish I had brought some chapstick with me. The hospital was so dry and my lips got very sore. Also some hard candies. I was there for 12 hours before surgery with no food or drink. A life saver would have been nice!    They asked if I wanted to see my new kidney before they put me completely under --I said yes.  And there it was , in a stainless steel bowl sitting on ice.  So ask if you can see yours.     Wear their hospital gowns --the drainage bag at the surgical site tends to leak and it leaves stains.  I knew there would be lots going on, but when you wake up with lines coming out all over, you feel a tad bit Frankensteinish!!    Truly the most amazing thing that can ever happen to you.  You're in my thoughts and prayers.  Stock your house with lots of water, juices, milk, etc.  You're going to be drinking all the timea!!!

And take a photo, or ask the doctor or nurse to, if they are willing. I think it would be cool to frame a photo of your new kidney.
