Catheter not working properly

After a failed kidney transplant in May, I've been receiving haemo via a neckline.

Got my pd catheter inserted last month and am now being referred to the surgeons to have it replaced.

Grr just soooo frustrating! Need a wee moan...

Shona don't worry sometimes the first placing doesnt drop into thr correct poition post op. Usually they get the sond placement right and you wiil have many years of good intake and drainage .You've just got to be brave I'm afraid and brace youself for a new placement which usally is placed on the other side of the abdomen so if it's any consolation the op will in a place which will not be still painfull

Sorry to hear about your failed transplant and unsuccessful PD placement.  Hopefully the second placement will work and you can start PD.  ESRD is frustrating enough without having to deal with failed (and painful) access procedures.

If you don't mind my asking, what happened with your transplant?

Well end of may my dad donated a kidney which had to be removed after a day or so due to a blood clot.

I then had the catheter inserted in June and it's sooo slow draining in (out is slightly quicker but not much!)

They're putting in a perm cath tomorrow morning as my neckline really needs to come out - it's been over 6 weeks! I've also just found out they're going to look at replacing my catheter on Friday so looks like I'll be spending a fun weekend in the hospital.

Just seems like everything is going wrong... Actually heard about this forum from a woman in the hospital who had just had enough with hospital etc and everything she said I could totally relate to. You know when you've had a bad day and any little thing just gets to you??

Shona,  All these things come to try us and they frigging do. I am sorry to hear about your transplant but do not give up hope you will get one. As for the catheter this happens a lot, my husband had to have his replaced because it did not work properly apparently it was too high up,  but it works OK  now. Please keep positive, you will have more down days than up to start with but it does get better.

I feel ya.  I have a PD cath, but I had the same issues.  The first time it was placed in my belly on the left side (right after my c-section I might add! OUCH!) and it was clogged after a week with Fibrin.  So they removed it and placed it in my right side.  After a few failed drains and fills at my center, they made me drink the "Go Lightly"  (for those of you who don't know what it is, it is the same solution given to people before a colonoscopy!), they thought I may be... "clogged up"... turned out some of my fatty tissue was responsible for "grabbing" my cath. on the inside.  So again, I had to have another surgery to tack the tissue up.  5 surgeries in 3 months!!! 

Hang in there, it DOES get better.

Well that's my surgery done...

They didn't see anything wrong when they opened me up but replaced the catheter anyways and removed the fatty tissue Annig83 mentioned (although mine wasn't pushing against the catheter at the time at least)

Another 10 days or so and they're going to try again...

Glad your surgery is over.  Get lots of rest and try not to stretch too much with that fatty tissue being tacked up...it feels like it is tearing if you do too much and it HURTS!     Let us know how you are doing!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I went through a similar frustrating few months when my cath wasn't working. A surgery later they got it right. It's been working properly for the last 8 months. Hang in there. Best of luck to you.
