Our desert tortoise Fluffy is in the vet hospital. She's not been herself lately and the vet did an xray - found she has 11 eggs, unable to go into labor. I hope they can help her through this. She's a sweet girl. "Egg binding refers to the condition where a female oviparous animal is due to lay eggs, but because of some complication, is unable to do so. The result is that the eggs are retained within the body."

Can you induce labor in a turtle?

My thoughts exactly!  :rofl;

Truly, though, I hope that the vet can smooth the way for the eggs to come out. Pets are special family members.

Fluffy was named many years ago - she's about 45 years old. Not sure how long the neighbors had them, but when the elderly lady died, my mom inherited the tortoises. She had Fluffy and the other 2 adults for 12 years, I have had them for 5. So her name goes way back.
They said they would induce labor this weekend. I have not heard anything and the vet said he would call if things got worse, so I am praying no news is good news.
Not sure if the eggs would survive. It depends on if they had to pierce them to get them to come out. This is all new territory for me.
Here's a photo of Fluffy a few years ago http://www.flickr.com/photos/karolfranks/3067930590/
Thanks for the good wishes. :thx;

Are the eggs fertilized? Do you have sexually mature male? I'm not sure about tortoises but bird sometimes go into egglaying without having a male around and of course that means the eggs won't develope into babies. How lovely to hear of such an "old" lady, although I guess being 40 when you can get up towards 100 is relatively young!

This is NOT Fluffy's xray, but it's similar and gives you an idea of how big the eggs are. The vet gave us a CD of her xray but it did not work so I need to get it again tomorrow.

The next few days I will be giving her food and hormones by syringe, and letting her soak in warm water each day. Hopefully she will pass the eggs, or they will be reabsorbed into her body. We don't know if/how she'll get through this. I brought her home but she seems so wrung out, poor girl. I hope some tender loving care will help her.

Be real carful about keeping her head above the water if your putting her in a puddle type thing.  they get very relaxed (at least the chickens do) and they can drown if not watched.  All the best for your fluffy..  I truly hope she's going to be ok....

This is an xray of our girl Fluffy. She had stopped eating and going into her shelter and the vet said that the 11 eggs could not be delivered. I cannot stop crying. After several days of rescue attempts, we decided to put down sweet little Fluffy. The eggs were not moving, her liver was in distress, she had a bladder stone blockage and she was shutting down. I cannot force feed an animal just to postpone the inevitable and her vet agreed that it was the humane thing to do. I know people can't believe that tortoises have any personality, but Fluffy was adorable and the boss of our two males, always leading the way. I don't know what they'll do without her. :-(
