I think educating ourselves is a good idea, however sometimes dialysis patients are too sick to do it.  That is when the social worker steps in and educates the patient and family. Also if your company is offering special programs then you should be informing patients about it.

It sounds like you are educating yourself in the dialysis system on the job. Good luck.

I used to work in a hospital and I know how stressful it was to work with patients that weren't willing to help themselves.  The ones that were and able, are far and few between, so I respect your rant and know that it doesn't pertain to all or me personally.  I would like to welcome you to this forum.  I think it is a great place for people like you to come and show us the other side of things, so please dont be scared away by the truthful negative remarks.  You are like a beetle in a ant hill and we will eat you up only because you are out numbered.   :boxing;

Thank you for sharing this info with us.

Good morning, children. If you haven't already educated yourselves before arriving in the classroom today, please don't look for ME to help you with that! I'm only here to learn on the job.

Seriously, though, HDSW does not work at our clinic. Our SW was there every month asking if there was anything she could do to help us. And she got back to us the next day with the answers to any questions that she couldn't address right away. She was awesome!

I have a very good part time social worker, she's the only one, and travels between two clinicks, she's very helpful, in fact I just email her when I need something and she's always there. I do ask her to help me to fill out paperwork because I'm blind, but that is the only reason. She also helps me understand bills and researches issues I can't resolve or don't understand. My social worker is what you claim social workers aren't suppose to do and I'm glad I have a good one like her.

I guess I would be screwed even more due to having blindness and visual impairment ??? ? Going on the internet to search for things is not the best answer for me even with technology on the pc.

From what I can remember of my social worker on Dialysis, she was nice, but my first one at a different center was not so much, but seems nicer than the the post I have read.

Do we care???....

Didn't get involved in this thread because what I think, and might have said would be enough to get me a lifetime ban from IHD....

Suffice to say HDSW, Build a bridge, and get over it!... You're not doing us any favours... You're getting paid for it... Can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen...

I think HDSW is a troll. He/She hasn't logged in since posting this. It was still an interesting discussion and provided insight for me.

I consider myself a veteran of dialysis.  Having said that I only had a couple of social workers who were helpful because they were able to help me with the maze of medicare, social security etc.  This is what most patients need, and if you don't feel like you should educate yourself with information to help me, then why should I waste my time talking to you twice a month?

HDSW sounds like she is not prepared for her job, and she doesn't want to be there.

Who knows, but may find that they won't have a job soon with that attitude and complaints from pateints also. If one can not do their job, there will be no job for them to collect a paycheck.

I sent HDSW a PM:
Really?
You came in here to bitch and moan about your patients.  There has been a number of posts in response to yours.  Apparently this is how you do your job...no follow up and then you wonder why there is so much social worker bashing.  1 post and then you run.  Prove us wrong.  Show us that there is some social workers that actually follow through.

Thank you, YLGuy, for sending a PM to HDSW.

I am still pre-Dialysis (10-12% kidney function) and people like HDSW
frighten me, because I know,
I will need a great deal of support if and when I have Dialysis.

I only ever met one social-worker and that was after I suffered a stroke
when I was left – like right now – without any medical care.
My husband and I had great hopes that this social worker could help us
to sort out the mess, but unfortunately there was no chance at all.

I can well imagine that to be in the trauma of Dialysis
and come across an unhelpful social worker really rubs it in.

I have often wondered who precisely is their employer,
and what precisely is their remit ?

Thanks again, YLGuy, for sending your PM to HDSW, well done.

Kind regards from Kristina.

Hello, Chris and jbeany, this social worker only saw me once to “tick off” that she saw me.
That was all. I was totally traumatized by the stroke, half-sided paralized,
unable to speak & unable to look after myself and my NHS-GP refused to see me,
and I certainly was unable to walk anywhere.

My husband and I had great hopes that this social worker could help us in our trauma
because we had no idea how to go from that point, we live in London/England.

My husband worked full time, shopped, helped me with my rehabilitation, cooked
and helped me with everything. He had no assistance, nor had I.
Medicines and medical care had to bought privately,
because no NHS-GP wanted to take me on as a patient,
my health was at that time too much in a mess because of the Lupus/MCTD & drug-intolerance,
which had not yet been diagnosed.

It was such a great shock to receive no help from the social worker who we had hoped would understand.

It was a typical case of “ticking off” and because of that I am still very sore about social workers.
