Optimal dwell time?

What are the dwell time that other people are using for PD?  I'm currently set to 13 minute fill/drain, with a 45 minute dwell with either 4-6 cycles (2-3 5,000 IU Bags).  Is this a common setting, or are others using a different amount of time?  Takes about usually 5:30 - 8 hours total.

I'm pretty new to PD myself. I do 9.5 hrs therapy with 4 dwells at an average of 1hr 40 min each.

Wow! 14 exchanges?! That is alot. Did your neph give you that prescription? I'm guessing since you do that many exchanges with a short dwell cycle, you are a fast transporter.  Dwell times depend on the results of your PET test (peritoneal equilibration test ). Did they do that for you? I was always told that a minimum of 1hr45m is normal for anybody.  Seems to me that 45 dwell time is pretty quick and really not giving the solution time to draw out much from your blood.

After you're done with your exchanges, how much is your UF? What strength solution are you using?

cytoxin, my husband does 3x5000 bags and last fill of 2000 extraneal. He does this over 5 cycles and it takes 7 hours. He also does a manual tea time bag.

I use 2000 bags, 4 cycles - 2 hr. dwell times.  No daytime manuals at this point.

My Neph gave me the 45 min dwell time, but I'm going to check with them about increasing it.  I currently get over the reqs from the PET (think I was getting 2.2 and 1.7 was required min)  I usually get 700-1200 UF and I go completely dry during the day and I use 1.5 solution.

so it seems that you're doing okay as far as getting sufficient dialysis. now it's really just a matter of time consumption, but that can only be checked witha kt/v test.  for you to do 14 exchanges at 45mins dwell time. then you take into consideration the time it takes to fill and drain, let's say it's an hour for each exchange (that gives you just 7 1/2 minutes to drain and fill), you're on the machine a total of 14 hours. that seems alot to me.

ask your neph if you could increase dwell time and decrease exchanges.

I do 5 cycles with 1 hour and 40 minutes dwell time each at night and one manual exchance each day....  Works for me!

There isn't 14 exchanges, not sure where you are reading that from...  It's 4 to 6 exchanges.  with 13 minutes to fill / drain and then 45 minutes of dwell time... so each exchange takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, for a total of 5:30 for 4 exchanges and 8 hours for 6 exchanges.

The 2.2 and 1.7 are Kt/V, not the results of Pet test. The 45 minutes of dwell time is about the shortest as one can have. You must be at the high end of the fast transporter (which is determined by Pet test). The UF usually peaks at 1 hour of dwell time. The short dwell time is the reason for high UF you have.

I'm starting the cycler this week and Doc has me set up for 5 dwells at 2500ml for 1 hour 15 minutes each and a last fill of 2000ml to drain 2 hours later.

Called my nurse to double check my times, we scheduled a PET test for tomorrow.  I'll see if that changes up the times I'll be using.

I do 7 exchanges with 45min dwells and I am a medium transporter.  My kt/v is normally 2.4
