will of the healthy makes up the fate of the sick.

Today a friend of mine on facebook was writing complaining about paying a deductible for a medical bill. At the end he wrote, "Wish I could be on welfare so I could drink beer, stay home, and get free medical care."

Would you be offended?

I wouldn't be offended, but I think your friend would be happier if he were a dog so he could sit home and lick his gonads all day in addition to drinking his favorite beverage and watching T.V. :sarcasm;

Not sure about "offended" but I'd definitely think the person was an idiot, unable to think very clearly.

I'm a litle offended just by his ignorance or stupidity. I'm not on welfare, but get Disability income and get state medicaid. Even with medicaid, I still have to pay into it and get nothing for free.  Not all get free medical care because they have to pay into it to meet a monthly spend down to get a medical card. I also don't sit at home all day and drink beer! He couldn't afford to do that either they way he thinks he can because he would have no cable since he could not afford it due to other things requiring funds such as room and board.

But to complain about a deductable, he isn't thinking right either. He should thinkabout what if he did not have insurance. I guess he hasn't paid much attention to the economy, unemployment rate, and so forth either.

Forgot saying, but went something like Ignorance can be fixed, but stupidity is forever.

No, because it's a generalized statement about those few who prefer to work the system instead of having the pride to work.  They are out there.  When a former governor in Michigan made some drastic reforms to our welfare system, we had healthy 55 yr old men who had never worked a day in their lives showing up to look for jobs at my family restaurant.

Just ask the public servants in CA who decided to make state assistance money available on a debit card to make it easier to access.   Sounds fine, doesn't it?  Those without the funds to maintain a bank account don't have to cash a check and carry large amounts of money with them in a bad neighborhood.  Except someone pulled the records to see where the withdrawals were being made.  $12,000 was withdrawn from ATMs located in California strip clubs.  Taxpayer funded lap dance, anyone?  And you thought those were just for politicians....
 That's not the worst of it, though.  1.8 million was withdrawn from ATMs in casinos!

I think those of us who are on it because we don't have a choice would gladly trade places with your friend, rsudock.  A trip though the system, where they expect you to account for every cent you spend might make him less enthused about the joys of welfare, too.  But the only stories that make the news are the scammers, not people like me.  When I first got food stamps, I was in shock.  I'd had a budget of about $25 a month for groceries.  I lived on ramen noodles and generic frozen veggies.  The first month I got my $180 bucks, plus back pay since the time I had applied.  I had $285 dollars that I couldn't spend on anything but food.  I had my cart loaded with fresh produce and decent meat for the first time in ages.
And I went right on clipping coupons and shopping the sales, too.

Thats his opinion and he is entitled to his opinion.
I see where he is coming from.  Welfare was not meant to be a way of life but a lifeline to get one back on there feet.

first of all we're not on welfare. and second, i worked 40 years and have earned every cent of the help i get. i have an uncle who thinks i'm living off the government. but then he also thinks every one of his 6 kids should be calling me and offering to donate, so i guess he isn't all bad. and medicare isn't free. i'm lucky, i worked enough to have my part a premium covered, but i pay $100 a month for part b. a lot of people who get government assistance don't spend their money wisely, but then people who work don't often either. no i'm not offended, comments like that are just dumb.  my mommy taught me if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. so i'll just shut up now.

Thanks for your replies folks. My "friend" and I had a heated debate about this for about an hour. I just don't like how folks make blanketed statements and generalizations about people.  I just know from here how some of us struggle already feeling like we should work when we don't and feel bad about it. I just wanted to open his eyes and make him realize you never know what situation someone is in and how they will interpret what you say....OKAROL he did threaten to unfriend me! lol
