Charmaine is a fellow D pasient at the unit and went to hospital for antibiotics. She was in a normal ward. She died in the early hours of yesterday morning. Diabetic coma. Her sugar went too low while she was sleeping and she never woke up.

My heart is breaking and the tears are streaming down my face as I sit here. She was going to get married in Feb.

Her fiance visited me at the unit last night and my chest was just aching with the hurt and sadness that he projected.

I am so sad.....  :'(

Why do bad things happen to good people? ??? :'(

Dear Des,
My heart goes out to you.
Try to imagine your friend in a good place - we are everyone of us going there - she just went a little bit sooner.
Life is full of sorrow - take time to grieve and then keep busy. I lost both of my brothers when they were young-
one in a car accident another with a brain tumour.  I always imagine them in another room -  I truly believe we will
meet again.
With deepest condolences,
Kay

Sorry to hear Des and from first hand knowledge, those diabetic lows are more dangerous in a hospital when I wasn't in the right ward. Luckily I was found on the floor by a aide walking by.

I am sorry for your loss. Rerun has some valid questions for sure. My mom is diabetic and I often worry about this happening to her. How low is low? We monitor my mom but how fast can bs fall that this could happen if she was checked regularly especially in the hospital.

 :grouphug;
A hospitalmost of the time just checks the blood sugar before meals and then at bedtime. On has to complain that they do not feel right to get their blood sugar checked, but if you are familiar with hospital stays, that call light is never answered in a timely matter at times or they come in 20 minutes later or even forget you.

Is your mom type one or type two diabetic ODAT?
With insulin, there are different types which allow bs to drop / maintain at different rates. Medication for type two diabetics acts on the same principle but reacts at a different rate. BS can drop at different rates due to activity, food, stress, other meds, body weight,so everyone has differences. Some people need to check their lood sugar more than 4 times a day. I was up to 10 times a day. How low is low, people react differently to which number is to low for them, but below 80 is time to start monitoring more or get some food. normal bs range is 80 to 140 mg/dl according to the ADA.
