OK, so I have a stonking great cold.  I am miserable and am making sure that everyone knows it.  I had a neph appt today but couldn't make it because I was running a fever and didn't think the doc would welcome my cooties.  My husband was kind enough to call the neph and leave a message about my fate and asked if the nurse could give me a call and let me know what kind of cold remedy was safe for me to take.

Nurse calls and says "Mucinex".  I relay this info to hubby.  On his way home from work, he stops by the chemist to get said medication and is told that they need to see his ID before they'll sell it to him.  I love my husband but he does not look younger than 21.  Unfortunately, hubby got a speeding ticket 3 weeks ago, and the police are holding his driver's license until, hell, I don't know.  So since hubby has no photo state issued ID on him, he can't buy Mucinex.  Apparently that loud noice I heard was DH exploding in indignation at the pharmacist.

I thought we were supposed to be getting government out of our lives.  But no.  You can't buy mucinex without a photo ID. ::)

I am soooo bored and I can't sleep with a drippy nose.

I had an allergic reaction with Mucinex. Made my neck and face itch like crazy. So I only took 2 pills from the $18 bottle and had to toss them. I think Benadryl is the best for a runny nose.
Seems weird, anyway, about being carded for Mucinex. They sell it here on the shelf. I certainly wasn't carded, but I am old LOL.

That reminds me...I need Kleenex.  I found my husband's passport, so now he can go buy me Mucinex and Kleenex.

Is Benadryl safe for people with crap kidneys?

I think you need your birth certificate to buy Kleenex.   :rofl;

They give Benadryl at my center all the time.  My nurse and neph both said it was okay for me to take.

Yes, I think so. Benadryl is what they often use to relax dialysis patients. Jenna never got any, but many people are given it in their line.

What I want to know is why is the police holding your husband's ID???  How can they do that?? I thought it was against some sort of law to be without ID - at least you can certainly get ticketed for being without it if you get pulled over!  Not only that, if something (God forbid) were to happen to him and he passed out somewhere, how would they initially ID him???  What if he needed to board a plane?  Visit a dr? Or any other such thing that requires ID (I won't even mention visit an establishment that sells alcohol or try to purchase some!)  I don't get it???

Well, I thought that was weird, too.  I don't know if it's just a state thing, but apparently in Illinois, if you've been ticketed for something and the case hasn't been settled yet, the police keep your licence and they give you your ticket, and that ticket IS your license for the time being.  BUT, it is not a PHOTO ID, and to buy Mucinex requires that you have a PHOTO ID.  Funny thing is that my husband is an attorney.

Thats what happens when you live Illinoism they take away your license and you can't buy anything containing sudanephrine ingredients without an ID. Has to do with using sudanephrine in making methamphetamines. I could be wrong about this so just correct me. :Kit n Stik;

Apparently Mucinex D contains pseudoephedrine and is controlled because people can make meth from it, as ChickenLittle says.
I never bought the "D" version, so maybe that's why it was just out on the shelf.
There are several kinds of Mucinex for various conditions.

Regular Mucinex is used to help reduce congestion by breaking up phlegm in the lungs and making coughs more productive.

Mucinex DM is used to relieve coughs caused by the common cold or bronchitis. Some other breathing illnesses may also be helped by using Mucinex DM. Mucinex DM can be taken once a day.

Mucinex D is similar to Mucinex DM, although it must be taken more than once daily.

Maximum Strength Mucinex is a stronger version of regular Mucinex, and Maximum Strength Mucinex DM and D are stronger versions of the regular Mucinex DM and Mucinex D.

Mucinex Full Force Nasal Spray helps relieve nasal congestion that may be due to a cold, upper respiratory infection, allergies or hay fever. It helps drain your nasal passages and sinuses by shrinking swollen membranes.

Mucinex Moisture Smart Nasal Spray helps to clear out excess phlegm but also soothe dry nasal passages by keeping them moisturized. By hydrating the membranes, moisture balance can be achieved for relief.

Mucinex Cough Mini-Melts are quick melting tablets to help suppress coughs and also breaks up mucus that causes congestion.

Mucinex Cold Liquid is created for children age 12. It helps to relieve nasal congestion by breaking up excess mucus.

I only use "Coricidin HP"  as a cold remedy.  My BP isn't all that high, but I get scared when I read the kidney warnings on everything else...

Yes, that's the reasoning behind it, but I'm not making meth, so what does this have to do with me?   :rant;

Mucinex Moisture Smart Nasal Spray...Hmmm....I know some people who could use some smarts.

I've thought about Coricidin HP, but I always ask my neph before I take any OTC med I'm not familiar with, and he was the one who recommended Mucinex.  Guess he assumed I wasn't cooking meth in the shed at the bottom of the garden. ::)

I got my Mucinex, but I have to issue a warning.  It is very effective, but the pills are enormous AND the medication has made my mouth really dry.  Now, since I am pre-D, I don't have fluid restrictions which is good because I have been drinking an awful lot of water.  If you DO have fluid restrictions, I'd stay away from this particular medication.
