I'm "Too" clean??

I'm on Nocturnal and my labs are good but my KT/V is off the charts.  I have zero kidney function and my KT/V is 5.7.  It is good at 2.

So the idiots are going to try and find me a smaller dialyzer (artificial kidney) so I don't get so clean.

Isn't the point of me going and sleeping on the machine for 8 hours to get really clean?  I can't believe they would "spend" money to get me a special dialyzer.  They won't even buy special tape!

       

Anybody heard of this?  I can't go just 2 nights a week because of fluid build up.

I don't understand. Is it taking good things out of your blood too? What are the possible complications or downside of being too clean?

Perhaps the tech who took the post-blood made a mistake and drew the blood from the Venous (blue) port instead of the Arterial port.

Changing dialyzers is a new one on me.  Usually they just offer to lower your time.  Unless they can prove it's harming you, borrow Kit's big stick and tell them you want the same one you have been using!

This is 4 months in a row and I'm the only one in the clinic that is "too clean".  But, I'll watch Ed the next time and see where he is taking the post from.

Doesn't make sense to me either.  I didn't know you could get too clean on D.  How do you feel?  I guess that's the important thing.

The only thing i can think of is that D is stripping your blood of everything ..but isnt that what it does anyway ?

Yeah, "too clean" was a stupid term to use for that.

Your lab numbers are given in ranges.  Potassium may be given as 3.5-5.5, for example.

A potassium that's too low will kill you just as dead as too high.

Your body needs phosphorus, potassium, PTH, all of it...in the correct amounts.

That's a new one to me. I'm on nocturnal too, but won't have my first set of labs back until next month. I'd be really curious to see what their rationale is, especially if your labs are within range. How do you feel?

Come again?  This makes no sense at all.  The only thing I can think of is that they're afraid you're removing too much potassium and/or sodium.  That's all I can come up with.

It can happen!!  You can be too clean. Dialysis is taking too much of the needed minerals , etc for you body to function properly. I know a lady who's been on noctural for about 7 years doing 6 nights a week 7 hours each night (shes home hemo!!) . She had to train for a new machine this past summer and the techs told her she was too clean!! She is now doing 5 days a week 5 hours each time and feels a lot better. Lot of it has to do with your body size.  The smaller you are usually you need less dialysis.  Changing your kidney will help because it will not remove as much. Changing the amount of time you spend on the machine would probably help too as long as you are not a big fluid gainer.  When hubby first started home hemo he was told to do 8 hours 5 nights a week. GHe has cut back to 7 hours 5 nights a week and everything is still really good. He is still being told to eat a little more phos and potassium though!!
