Did you accomplish anything today?

Tailored a pair of brand-new pants with new elastic in the waist band.  I just bought them before my too-sick-to-eat weight loss, and was too cheap to donate them before I'd even worn them.  Also, fixed a hook on a bra, sewed on a button, and managed to empty the mending basket.

Dyed a shirt from a craft project - I drew a leaf design up the front and down the long sleeve of a white cotton shirt with Elmer's blue gel glue.  I hand-dyed it red today.  The glue acts like wax resist for a batik design - only I just did it in one color.     I added salt to the dye to make the color absorb better.  It was supposed to be at least half a cup, and the only thing I had in that amount was sea salt.  Hmmmm.....it didn't dissolve like regular salt would have, so I have sections of the shirt that are saltier, and have darker dye spots.  I still think it's going to look really cool, though.  Can't wait to see the dried and washed finished product.  (Also tossed in a purple shirt that fits really well, but was starting to fade.  Should be an interesting maroon color when it's done.)

Now that the craft room tables are cleared, I'm ready to start on my next project - infinity scarves from silk.

I have not accomplished much today. I hate these days where I try to relax but then when I look back on the day, all I can see is that we did not do very much and there is still a never-ending mountain of cleaning ahead of me. Also, Gwyn has bursitis of the elbow and is in a lot of pain. His elbow is all squidgy and horrible from the fluid, and of course this starts in earnest on a Friday night. The ER won't do anything but prescribe pain killers, same with urgent care. They are just referring him to his GP. What GP??!! Ours quit a year ago, and we have had little luck in finding a new one. The one I chose for us is so popular that I could not get an appointment until November, but then I lucked out and got in with a cancellation in early August. So, I just switched my November appointment to Gwyn. He cannot get a last minute appointment with the guy because you have to be an established patient for that. So, Tuesday morning I will beg and plead as the receptionist did tell me that once in a while the doctor will see a spouse on an urgent basis. Blah! He is upstairs HOPEFULLY resting his arm. The poor man has had so many joint issues. His knee went out today during a gentle stroll and Aidan had to run back to the house and grab his knee brace. I really want him to take a sick day Tuesday and try to get in to see someone. Once again, many thanks to the American medical industry for their idiotic regulations. I am waking up now, and it's nearly 10PM, so perhaps I can get some more cleaning done, but then I don't want to throw off my sleep schedule by staying up half the night. Tomorrow we are visiting friends at theirs, and I just hope Gwyn can enjoy it.

Yes, I participated in the Gift Of Life Walk and our community raised $16,000 in money for the Kidney Foundation!!           

My family and I raised $500 of it, so I was really proud!

I got the bus into town only to find that the thing I went in for has to be completed online and then I'll have to go back later in the week for an appointment.  So, with time to spare before my bus home, I continued honing my skills in the art of shopping for bargains.  The only problem is that I'm spending A LOT of money on bargains and I'm thinking this defeats the whole purpose ...

My husband & I have a merchandising business. I am an independent contractor. Businesses  will call when they need a display set up, taken down, maintained, etc. Movie companies call when they want someone to go (usually opening weekend) to audit specific shows (or in this case, count the boxes of 3D glasses!). I count the people, gauge audience reaction,etc. We started this way before I was diagnosed. He was laid off and there was nothing in the area that paid. I discovered the need for a merchandiser by accident on the internet. We have a fairly large area that we travel and there are few others in our area that do this so we get more calls than we can handle! It works out great for me since I have not been able to find a job locally that is willing to work around my D schedule.

Gah! I cannot see straight!

The bus issue continues to loom large around here. I spent two entire days in meetings with various individuals about why it is NOT OK for a bus to take 90 minutes to take my children well under 2 miles. I have been surprised at who will agree with me and who has implied that I am being unreasonable. It looks like we will finally triumph in getting the bus route reversed so that my kids will be first to be dropped off (along with the other 4 children who are attending this after school program). If it does not happen, I will have to collect the kids and drive them over to the afterschool program every Wednesday and Thursday or they will miss their piano and karate. My friend called yesterday after I got out of a meeting with La Directoria (Principal, headmistress, what have you) and said she had rung up the very person I was about to call. She said that she seems to have convinced him to reverse the route, so I said Fabulous! I am going to call him right now. She then spent an inordinate amount of time trying to stop me from calling him. I am resisting the urge to put the word friend in quotes, because she is a wonderful person, but with a controlling streak that would make Martha Stewart look relaxed. I eventually became exasperated and said J., I'm not going to screw this up for you or me! She laughed and let it go. Sheesh. Yesterday was Liot's day to bring in a snack for his class. I had left 3 boxes of breakfast bars on the top shelf of his locker (those wooden ones without doors) about a week ago so that I would not forget. His teacher told me yesterday morning that one of the K4 kids had stolen the boxes, and they were only able to recover some of the snacks. Did I not tell you all that this school is nearly 80% impoverished kids? When the teacher said Well, you left them there a long time I snapped at her Look, my kids spent 90 minutes on a bus yesterday and missed their karate class - I can only be expected to cope with so much! I did bring another two boxes of a different flavour breakfast bar, even after she told me not to bother.

This morning, I dropped Aidan off at his baseball, wrote a check, coordinated with his friend's mom on pick up, and tore across town to a place where the public school is holding music lessons. Aidan has wanted to take guitar for forever. For $15 you get an entire semester of group lessons. Oh, hell yes, we're down with that! You had to sign up in person and they only had a two and half hour window to do it. He won't be able to attend every class, but at that price, who cares. Then I popped into Target to buy snacks for next month (think I'll give them direct to the teacher next time) and a gift for a birthday party Liot is attending tomorrow. They are holding it at the Audubon Centre - bless you, little boy's mom, for not holding it at one of those horrifying inflatable slide places. Aidan and Gwyn are at soccer. I forgot everything about gymnastics for Liot this morning, but as I haven't signed him up yet, I am not out any dosh. I'll try to start him up next week. Liot had a soccer game this morning and they made him play for the opposing team because they were short players.

I have all sorts of papers and assignments due next week, don't even have two of my books. Thankfully, no more commitments today, so I can get to work.

My week has been a blur.  I'm hoping to catch up on homework this weekend.  I'm getting everything done on time, but I'm doing too much of it the night before it is due.  This makes me feel constantly harried and rushed.  So my plans for this evening - everything that is due on Monday, hopefully.  Sunday, I hope to accomplish everything I need to do for Wednesday.  Then, just for once, I won't be up until the middle of the night on Tuesday, working on homework. 
Instead, I'll be scrambling to finish a resume and a cover letter for an internship opportunity I just found out about - the apps are due Friday.

Over slept this morning. Missed part of my D. Slept most of the time. After, went to the Mall in Peru. Bath & Body Works had a free gift with any home fragrance purchase. Needed some more candles anyway. Then to Menard's for bird food & Starbuck's for coffee. Back home again. Thinking about just taking a shower, putting on "Dead Like Me" and heading to bed!

Fingers crossed for you, jbeany. They'd be crazy to pick anyone else for that internship in my opinion.

Today, Gwyn and I started the day with an argument. Ick. It was all over soon enough, though, and we took Liot to his friend's party, dropped him at the Audobon Center, took Aidan to get a guitar, went to Trader Joe's for supplies and sandwiches for lunch, party ran a bit late so we did not get to the gardens for our tree walk until half an hour into it. No time to eat sandwiches. Walked in the rain for an hour learning about various trees, returned home and had the sandwiches for an effortless dinner while watching How To Train Your Dragon, one of the better kid films we own. Aidan made lunches (it is one of his jobs to earn his allowance) and right now both boys are on the couch playing with the guitar. I am so glad - Aidan seems really eager to learn how to play. He has not shown this sort of enthusiasm toward anything but video games or Pokemon cards in quite some time.

I bumped into my elderly next-door neighbour whilst walking down the road and let her ramble on at me for a good ten minutes.  I nodded in all the right places, laughed when I was supposed to and expressed sympathy for her poor foot (apparently the bottle of water fell on it; I think she meant the bottle of wine ...)

That's my neighbourly good deed out of the way for this week!  Yay!

Meeting with the lawyers - both student and teacher -  was rescheduled, so I get to stay home for the afternoon.  Homework already started, and the resume to work on next.  I'll get something caught up this week if it kills me!

It's a cold, wet day here. I have no appts., no errands to run today, etc. I think I will light some scented candles and scrub my bathroom!

I have made several lists.        To add to my already existing lists.   I'm setting the lists aside and will do some handsewing on a dress I'm making.  It has about 50 cloth rosettes on the bodice.   My husband is out of town, so no cooking or cleaning for me today.     I guess that means that I have really accomplished nothing!!

I finished my first Biometry homework last night - we have an hour to complete it online. I got a 100%, so that's encouraging, although with all the stats I've taken, I would have been mortified with anything less.

Today has been bland. Laundry, a few dishes, bit of reading for anthro. My Public Health text arrived via the post, which is great as I have catching up to do. House is an utter disaster. We were so close to a reasonably clean and organized abode - what on earth happened?

Rather a full day today. Gwyn finally reached head of Milwaukee school transportation and he told me that the guy was just delightful. The kids' bus route should be officially reversed starting Friday. This saves my kids the stress of being moved to a new school mid-year, saves us the money that trying to use a charter bus would cost, and saves me loads of time. Today, Liot had soccer practice, so dropped the kids off at school, reported to my 9:30 class, tore across campus to make it just in time for my 11AM class. I used my new iClicker. This is a cool little device that allows the prof to ask quiz questions in class, you choose from multiple answers and everyone's results are posted instantly (no names, just as a bar graph). These questions comprise 20% of our grade, although the point is more to force people to class since the questions are ludicrously easy.

Returned home, made myself my favorite sandwich of fried queso fresco and sauteed red bell pepper on a multigrain roll. Watched a bit of streamed television, then grabbed the kids from school, dropped them off at the afterschool program, began reading my Public Health text in the parents lounge only to have two dads come in and start talking to me about school and work and life. An hour later I suddenly realised how late I was for Liot's soccer practice, grabbed him, grabbed Aidan, and off we went. Liot threw one gianormous wobbly. Of course he did, because Gwyn was at a golfing event with friends and I cannot lift a 5 year old who weighs nearly half what I weigh. I set Aidan on him, but Liot was wearing spikes and kicking at people, so it was dangerous. Aidan's coach was there and he kept making eye contact with me as if he were wondering if he should offer to carry Liot to the car. (I am so glad he didn't. I could not have handled the risk to his person.) It was so frustrating, but between the two of us Aidan and I managed to subdue him and he even got to join his team in a final huddle at the end. I had a long talk (actually lecture) with Liot on the ride home. I think I've got through to him. Dinner was low key - goat cheese and cranberry Quorn patties, fruit, bread. Gwyn got back and had brought me a Bota box that he found at Woodman's (an Aldi's-like warehouse market) for only $17! The Shiraz received 94 points from Wine Spectator, and the box is 100% recyclable, equivalent to 4 bottles of wine, and fits so compactly in the cupboard or, for the Chard, fridge.

Cariad, every time I read your posts, I get tired... *LOL*  I also lead an incredibly dull life......

My weekend....

on Saturday night, my mom and I went to Futureshop to buy me a new mouse.  We ended up getting that, True Blood 3rd season on DVD, and they had every Harry Potter movie, except for Deathly Hallows Part One, of course, on for $8.99, so I bought the first 2 movies.

On Sunday, Mom and I went for a drive up around the west end of the Island.  We ended up in the town of O'Leary, at the Potato Museum.  We didn't go in, because it cost $6 per person, but they do have a giant potato outside on the lawn, so we took some pictures, and Mom bought a pin for a friend's little fella, who has an immense collection of pins and buttons. Whenever we travel, we try to buy him one.  We also found a potato field full sf wind turbines, so we wandered in and took a few more pictures.  We then went down another road, that took us to a wharf with a huge seawall and very cute little beach, so I took a few more pictures.  We also came across a park with a waterfall, that happens to be a popular fishing spot.  I saw this park on the news.  The community got together and built a small platform near the edge of the water, meant to allow those in wheelchairs to get close enough to the water to fish.  It's also a great spot for taking pictures of the waterfall. *G*
