What's past is prologue

« Reply #1400 on: April 24, 2013, 02:35:46 PM »

Accomplished very little. I had to stay in to wait for our bed to be delivered. I sensed that there would be issues with this and was not disappointed. The delivery man had a strong Geordie accent, so I could only understand about 3/4 of what he was saying. He claimed he couldn't get his truck to the door, so he told me he could either drop the bed in the middle of the street or he could keep take it back with him. He then demanded to know "Do you want your delivery or not?" He was blocking a woman from exiting the parking area, so he suddenly said he had to let her out and jumped in his truck and left. I apologised to her and I could tell from the look on her face that she felt sorry for me having to interact with this creep. Next thing I knew, he had thrown his truck into reverse and was screeching toward my building. I suspected that if I hadn't rushed off to the side that he would have run me over and then blamed me for being there. Then he brought the bed out and wanted to know who told me that I would have this delivered to my door. (Isn't that normally where deliveries are brought? To one's door??) I answered 'the website', which was quite clear on this issue actually, and he said "that's what you get for internet shopping" and shoved a form in my hand to sign. Gwyn then had to leave work to help me get this bed inside the building (because he was not even willing to place it inside the door). Gwyn rang up the company who said we should write a formal letter of complaint so that they can complain to the delivery company. I feel on the one hand that I should do this and on the other, this person knows where we live and he did strike me as rather unstable.

Thankfully I was able to walk to the school to collect the boys and the exercise and distraction helped settle my nerves. Bought pizza and sparkling water from M&S. Also have reserved a space for Dyl's birthday party. He and his friends will have a horse riding lesson at the local school. Can't possibly top last year's training sea lions party, but I know he's going to love it.

I've been working for days clearing up the basement after the flooding.  I think I should be able to finish up tomorrow.  I've had to throw out some rugs, and I sure won't be replacing them!  This is the 3rd time since 2007 that we've had so much rain so quickly that we've had flood problems, and somehow I don't think it will be the last.  Each time it's worse than the previous flood!  So there won't be any more fancy rugs!  Waste of money.

Got handed a file today at the pro-bono clinic.  The law student in charge of the file is mysteriously not coming back for the second, required term.  No one offered an explanation of what happened to him, but I don't really need one after working on the file.  What a mess!  I got a lovely head start at redrafting most of the documents, and have the motion mostly rewritten to include all the things that were left out.  Hopefully, the poor student who inherits the mess when the new term starts in two weeks won't be too lost when I'm done, but I expect it's going to take me most of that time just to properly sort through this and the other files the first student mucked up.

There's a reason I got flowers for Administrative Professionals Day, after all!  :angel;

Ah, what a shame. Sorry to hear it. Rugs are definitely not a pocket-change purchase.

This was an issue in Milwaukee, the floods. I remember writing about it on here one time because I had never seen anything like it. If I had taken a few more minutes to collect the kids I think we would have been in big trouble. My uncle's basement flooded that year, and he had so many priceless items down there. Then the city decided to open the sewers and as quickly as it started, it was over. My uncle was completely fed up with it, as he said "we can't have the storm of the century every year!" Apparently there are environmental regulations that the city has to follow when it comes to opening the sewers, so everyone in town gets water damage first and then they decide it's bad enough to justify the environmental impact. So everyone loses. You'd think there might just be a better way....  :waiting;

I walked about 5 miles today. I have the boys doing what I call a bus challenge. For every week that we get to school and back without resorting to taking the bus, I will give them each £12. (A monthly bus pass costs about £50, and I'd rather pay them that money than Stagecoach.) So, I wind up walking a minimum of 3 miles per day as I walk them there, come back on my own, walk to meet them, bring them back at the end of the day. I also met up with two friends who live round the corner from the school, so that was an extra journey. It's about .7 miles each way, and then the friends and I drove to a neighbouring town to wander through the charity shops, so I reckon that would account for an extra .8 miles.

I was very good and did not buy an adorable Red or Dead handbag. It was £15, which seemed too high for a used, moderate-value designer bag at a charity shop. I did, however, grab a National Trust waterproof-backed blanket roll that looked unused. We are going to two National Trust sites over the bank holiday weekend, and the weather is supposed to be brilliant so I think a picnic may be upon the cards. I checked and they sell similar blankets for £30 and up, and I got this one for £5. :yahoo;

I figured out how to use the hand-held scanner and took it to court to scan an entire case file for a client.  Got that done, and read it while I was at it.  Soooo much work to do on it...  :p

I walked over to the grocery store that's 2 blocks away to get some Emla cream and an iced tea.  Not really that big of a walk, but I really haven't been feeling the walking thing lately

Oh, agreed! We signed up as members at our first opportunity, and I cannot believe all we've got for our hundred quid or whatever the price is, and the best months to go are just beginning. We are off to two of the bigger draw properties, Stonehenge and Sutton Hoo, and no, they haven't moved them, those two sites are still not particularly close to one another. :) Aidan studied Sutton Hoo in school, and I really cannot stand to live here much longer without the boys (including Gwyn) being able to say that they've seen Stonehenge. The American shouldn't be the only one in the house who's been! So this weekend it is.

The kids passed their first week of the Great Spring Bus Challenge. They'll each have an extra £12 to spend as they like. :cheer:

Blimey ... they're nowhere near each other!  Sutton Hoo is near where I was brought up.  You'll need to go to Woodbridge because it is a rather nice little Suffolk town (it has VERY expensive charity shops I think *grin*).  I think I last went to Stonehenge when I was about fourteen.  It didn't impress me much because it was too touristy.  Plus, I suspect that time-travelling future people built it just to mess with our heads!

Today I spent four hours gardening, found out the elderly man over the road passed away last week, did two loads of washing (and hung them on the line), picked up Blokey's meds from the pharmacy, posted three postcards and a 'thank you for the invitation, we'd be delighted to attend the wedding of Blokey's brother' acceptance card, took in a Tesco delivery and went to the library.  At 10am this morning a knock at the door interrupted my Just Dance 2 routine, but it was only Blokey; he'd forgotten to take his meds with him to work.  He blamed me of course.  I don't work on Friday's and that messes up his routine.  What he really means is that I'm not up before him making sure his meds, phone, wallet and wedding ring are all together ready for him to grab and take with him!

We're actually coming back home in between. We live pretty much equidistant to the two.

Thanks for the tip. Don't know that we'll have time this trip, but something to keep in mind for future excursions.

Well.....so far, I've email blasted invitations to a surprise birthday lunch, planned the lunch menu, worked, grocery shopped,shopped 2 thrift stores looking for a used toaster over that is big enough for my polymer clay projects (no luck, but too many books I didn't need), measured my planting bed, searched 4 garden stores to see what was available that will work there (partial sun and one big window that's only about 3 feet off the ground - everything I'm getting has "dwarf" in the name!) and made notes of locations and prices of what I want to get so I could compare prices before buying anything.  Tomorrow I shop, pick up my teenage nephew, and plant with my yard-boy to help!

I didn't do anything today except go to dialysis and sleep. *L*  Tomorrow, however, I'm going to the house to help Mom with sorting stuff.  She wants to have a yard sale in a couple of weeks, and a lot of the stuff that's still there is mine anyway.  My dad is being no help at all.  A lot of his stuff is still there too, and he's the one that's so anxious for the house to sell.  I never realized how much of a hat my dad was until after he and Mom split up.

In the midst of a bit of a mare right now, with my son not reminding me until last night that he has a fancy dress (costume) party at school tomorrow. He is supposed to dress in clothes from a certain decade, anything from 1950s-1990s. He wants to go as Yoda, because you can also dress as a character from film or television, but I said no to that because I think the point is to cobble an outfit together that represents the fashion of the time. Right now I am trying to go one of two directions - 1950s biker like Marlon Brando, or Marty McFly from Back to the Future.

I annoy myself with being such a perfectionist when it comes to these things. We have so many clothes in storage - I know I have a biker jacket that might fit Aidan if I can only find it, and biker boots which will fit him as we are currently the same shoe size. Worried that they might look too girly, but if I remember right, they were fairly unisex. No cool military-inspired cap, though. Also, no black hairspray and no confidence that I can find the items I do own quickly enough.

Cannot find the orange gilet (puffer vest) for Marty, and without that, well, not sure it would come across at all.

Frustrated because I kept running into a mom of a classmate of Aidan's this morning at all the charity shops. Finally, I thought to ask "so, are you on a hunt for the fancy-dress party, too?" She knew nothing about it. So I explained it to her, and she reaches into the OxFam rail, pulls out the most gorgeous flower-child dress, then finds a brown suede jacket with fringe for her daughter. Explain the justice in that?!

I've rung Debenhams, nothing. There are no department stores in my town so anything I find will require a ride anyhow. Bah. Stuck.

10 years on and off dialysis

I used to hate dressing up days at school with four kids!!!
Did you like Sutton Hoo (was it worth the trip?) I have to admit I have never been there despite living within 10 miles of it!!!!
I have been to Stonehenge though, and I love that...

Today I managed (for the first time in six months) DRUM ROLL here ... :cheer:  :cheer:  :cheer:
to walk around Tesco's to do a shop with a trolley. Wheelchair stayed firmly in the boot!
Felt really pleased til I got home and had a phonecall from my dialysis unit telling me my pre-dialysis potassium on Wednesday was 8!!!
Sure that can't be right (really strict diet until tomorrow  >:() but I feel okay.

Four! I can't even imagine. They'd never coax me out from under the bed.... :)
Gwyn found my biker jacket and boots in storage easily. Found black hairspray at a place that specializes in drug paraphenalia in the neighbouring city, and we employed the black cap that Aidan used to play Salvador Dali, if you unsnap the brim it has basically the same shape as Brando's. Rolled up blue jeans, a white t-shirt (I've learnt we should *always* have one of  them at hand for the boys) and a heavy black belt and the outfit looks pretty authentic. I think he'll have fun with it.

I did like Sutton Hoo but it's nowhere near as majestic as Stonehenge. The best part for me was going on the tour - you learn a lot about the Anglo Saxons and how paganism was being replaced by Christianity during the time of the burial. Our guide was one of the archaeologists on some of the past digs, so that was cool, and you also learn about the various plunder attempts that took place there. The one disappointment was that the majority of the artifacts are reproductions - the real ones are in the British Museum. Still, for a ten minute drive, I'd say check it out.

My second day after returning to work after fistula surgery and three weeks off.  The kids missed me.  One boy brought me a card with m and ms snack pack to welcome me back.  One of the girls gave me a little Shrek Donkey toy.  3 days of school left.

I cleane dout supplies and did paperwork and more paper work, and coaxed children to behave and work today!  I have more to do tomorrow. Never ends.
