Hurricane Igor caused a LOT of damage!!

We don't usually get hurricanes here in Newfoundland but last Tues Igor showed us that it is quite possible!! Where I live didn't get much of its fury (only maybe 70 mm of rain!!) The southern and east coast were hit hard!! One man died when the driveway he was standing on washed away ad took him with it. His body was found yesterday underneath a new beach that was formed!! Many communities are still isolated because of roads and bridges being washed away. Some people lost everything - houses washed away!! Some places got 225+ mm of rain and 140 km an hour winds. One place recorded wind gusts of 170 km of wind!! Roofs blew off apartment buildings!! Many people were without power for days. because hurricanes are usually downgraded to tropical storms or less before they reach here people do not prepare for hurricanes like other places!! People started to run out of food and water with no way to get it to them only by boat and it was too windy for any boat travel. Many roads are reopened now but only with temporary fixes and it a lot of places one way traffic. The military is here helping to get the roads open and supplies to people. I have some pictures posted on facebook but don't know how to put them on here (they are someone else's pics not mine). The town that I grew up it was hit hard and the town my brother and sister live it is still not acesible by car. My sister in law left home for one night for a doctor's appt and 5 days later she is still not home and it looks like it will be at least another week before the road is open!! She is with my brother though - he works on a boat and it is docked at the capital city - St. John's!! Damage is estimated to be at least 75 -100 million dollars!!
Guess most people in Newfoundland will be more prepared next time a hurricane is heading our way!!

I am so sorry to hear about the damage Igor did. I do empathize since I am in the Caribbean, right in the path of hurricanes. My caring thoughts and prayers are with Newfoundland at this time.

Yeah, I've seen some pretty incredible pictures on the news too. Those of us in Atlantic Canada can get pretty complacent when it comes to hurricanes, cuz usually it's just some wind, rain, and some good surfing. But every once in a while, we get one storm that knocks us on our asses. Then the next one has us scared out of our wits, like Earl did me. I was in Halifax during Juan, and Earl seemed to be going the same way, but it didn't have the strength that Juan did. Igor missed us in the Maritimes, but slammed you guys in Newfoundland. I hope things get, at least, back to working order soon.

Over 1 million dollars was raised with a radiothon yesterday called Hope for Homes to help the people who lost things during the hurricane - some people lost everything they own including their house!! All proceeds went to the Salvation Army to distribute according to need. I was talking to one of my sisters last night. She lives in one of the communities that is still cut off from the highway because of washed out roads. Luckily there was no personal damage in that community - although she did have a few stressful hours wondering what route the brook that goes past her house was going to take when it overflowed. Luckily it went the opposite way to her house and just washed out the side of the road!! Yesterday the salvation army flew in a shipment of groceries and supplies. Most people appreciated the toilet paper more than the groceries!! LOL They had lots of food. A few people in the community have there own vegetable gardens and most people had lots of canned food and food in their deep freezers. Schools in a lot of areas have not reopened since the hurricane because roads are washed out and buses can't get through. The military is here putting in some combat bridges until major repairs can be done but those bridges can only take one car at a time!! My sister can get to other communities on quad but not by car yet!! Igor was certainly angry when he swept past Newfoundland!!!
