Different opinion?

Any spouses, loved ones, caregivers, have a different opinion of the choice between HEMO, PD, or transplant?

I prefer Home HEMO my wife wants Home PD, I have sided with her because I want her happy, what are your opinions?

I would love to do home hemo but with the stuff going on around here and the graft being six year sold, it ain't gonna happen any time soon.  Just waiting on tests for the transplant team for evaluation is making me crazy.  A patient viewpoint.  I will now step off of the board and let the caregivers battle it out!

I prefer Hemo for my husband.  We considered PD but it was not something I could manage working fulltime and traveling on occasion.  We have no family here and there is no Home Health Support.  My husband wants to do what is best for me to manage.

Mike's kidneys are HUGE so no room for PD.  After I learned about the NxStage (  ) there was no question left because he wants to go back to work and for that he has to travel.

I would really like Joe to do home hemo, but he's not interested in learning to stick himself right now.  Maybe in a few months he might be more open to it.  For the t. list he's on (pancreas/kidney) they say the wait is about a year, so he might be thinking why deal with a new hassle when a new kidney could be right around the corner?  I don't know.  To be honest, our current home setup would not be ideal for home hemo, so hopefully we will be moving within a year or so, and assuming he still hasn't gotten a transplant by then, maybe we'll look more seriously into it.

I'm on home hemo, needling myself, which is not that bad as it sounds...ouch!. I do dialysis at home so I can go to work everyday and do dialysis at night (almost there)...it gives me more freedom than other alternatives. The idea is to sleep with it, but I have not been able to...anxiety....soon I will.

I really wanted to try Home Hemo, but she was a lot nervous about it, wanted to do PD because she had done this previous to her transplant 11 years ago. I guess if it works out this is a good thing, but she really wants to work again, and it seems from what I have read Home Hemo makes you feel better.

I think I read the opposite??  My concerns about PD for my husband were risk of hernia since he does heavy lifting at work and around the house, and risk of infection (we have pets all over the place, pet hair floating around, etc.).

Depends on many variables.  Generally people on home HD feel better and live the longest.  The number of people who switch to PD from home HD is very, very low, the number who switch the other way, from PD to home HD is much higher for many reasons, for some it is how they feel.

In his situation PD would probably be even higher risk than it usually is compared to HD.

Keeping clean your dialysis environment you will have to do regardless. I have two cats and a teenager  and so far so good. I do hemo almost everyday but the schedule changes as my activities change. I like (?...well...prefer) home hemo than the other alternatives. It works for me.

I have to say I am a little worried about the pets as well. We have 2 birds, 2 cats, a dog, and a 14 Year old ( although I don't think of my son as a pet :-) ). What I am concerned about is she is used to sleeping with one of the cats and one of the dogs and I want them OUT of the bedroom at night. Also I'm starting to see that Home PD or Home Hemo sites always say there method is better. Glad I can see some difference of opinion here :-).

For now we will stick with PD cause I want her to be happy, and comfortable, but I do continue to discuss the possibilities of Hemo with her, just in case!

All of the animals need to ALWAYS be kept out of the room where PD is done.  The hair, dander, bacteria, dust, etc., they bring with them and shed into the room, have the potential to become airborne and settle on places which need to be sterile.  That's why there should be never be any air current in the room while hooking up and disconnecting.  There was a thread on this but I forget what the title was -- maybe someone remembers and can post it.
