Hurricane Earl Headed our way

As some of you weather buffs might know, Hurricane Earl is now threatening the Caribbean and is heading towards the British Virgin Islands where I live. I trust that everything goes well for us. I didn't help my feelings to know that this is the anniversary of Katrina!

What precautions do you take for something like this? What do you do if you loose electricity? Do you have a generator?

Oh no! I hope it misses you!
Here's the list I found, was published a couple of years ago, might help to think about some of these things:
Emergency kit for kidney patients
Basic emergency kit for kidney disease patients:
Emergency phone numbers for doctors and dialysis center as well as another nearby dialysis center.
At least three days' worth of medication as well as a list of medicines and dosage amounts.
If you are on peritoneal dialysis, a week's worth of dialysate and any supplies to help you do your exchange, such as a waterless hand cleaner.
If you are a diabetic, a week's worth of supplies including syringes, insulin, alcohol wipes and glucose monitoring strips.
Food for the three-day emergency diet and a copy of the diet. Food items needed for three-day diet: (This very strict plan is needed to control the buildup of toxins such as potassium, phosphorus, urea and fluids that can be life-threatening if dialysis treatments are missed due to emergency.)
Evaporated milk.
Bottled water.
Powdered fruit-flavored drink.
Soft drinks (no dark cola due to high phosphorus).
Cereal (no Raisin Bran).
Sugar and artificial sweetener.
Low-potassium fruit bowls.
Cans of unsalted tuna, salmon, chicken or turkey.
Peanut butter.
Grape jelly.
Honey.
Mayonnaise.
White bread.
Vanilla wafers or graham crackers.
Hard candy.
Marshmallows.
The three-day diet consists of menus using the listed ingredients for three days' worth of meals.

Thankfully, they haven't turned off the electricity yet.
Thanks for the list, Okarol. I do have some of those things at the ready.
I don't have a generator. Electricity will probably be off for just a day.
One problem is that our chest freezer has lots of expressed breast milk for when Sam goes back to work Sept 13. So we are definitely hoping that the electricity is not off too long. Until then, we will not be opening the chest freezer!
So far we are having lots of wind, and some rain. The hurricane is now just about Antigua.
Keep us in your prayers.

Stay safe, Bajanne. It is that time of year and I have my supplies in place. The last big one to hit Raleigh left us without power for a week. No stores, gas stations open-- I learned my lesson and keep things stocked now. Maybe that will insure the hurricane will stay out to sea! Earl is a big one and then there is Fiona right behind. Hope you, Sam and the boys are safe and nothing is damaged.

The last big one to hit here was Juan.. 2003. I think.. I was in the hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the time. Power was out in the city for a week. I was stuck at the hospital and couldn't get home because the streets weren't clear of fallen trees. The hospital cafeteria was the only place you could get hot food, although us patients were stuck with sandwiches, which I don't think was fair. The roof came off the building, and landed in the parking lot, and there was flooding throughout half of the building. Thankfully, not the half that I was on.
I remember going outside the day before to call my mom on my cellphone. I sat on a park bench under a big tree in a little park that was just between the main door and the parking lot. The next day, the trees in that park were all gone.
I didn't sleep that night, I had a nasty fear of wind, and I remember looking out the window at the city. Normally, when you look out the window, you can see all the lights of a city, and from the hospital, you can see the harbour lights, but that night, it was black. I was on the 6th floor, and in the morning there were blades of grass stuck to the window.
I fear that Earl will be just as bad or worse, because the water around the Maritime provinces is stilll quite warm, and probably will not slow the progression of the storm as quickly as it normally would.

Here I am, my dear IHD family! The going was not bad at all. My landlord had about 15 banana trees and they all blew down. Our only problem is that electricity has not yet returned to my area!! Last night was horrid. At least the night before there was a lot of breeze because of the high winds. But last night it was very still, and hot!!! We could scarcely sleep. In fact, about 10p.m. we all piled into the car and went for a drive (with the A/C jamming!), but we couldn't do that forever. We still had to return home. Sam took a shower about 3 times during the night!
I am at work today at the Tourist Information Desk at our ferry dock, so I have electricity and A/C, but my family is not that lucky today. Hope the electricity comes on soon.
Thanks for your caring words and thoughts.
We hear that Fiona is nearing, but not too intense. We should be getting more wind and rain.

I am glad everything turned out good except for the electricity.
Hurricane Earl is now setting his sights for the Carolinas. Those living in his path take care.

Still no electricity!!!!
Last night we had to go by a friend of Sam's to sleep. And what is particularly upsetting is that just over the road, other people have electricity. There are only a few places in the territory with no electricity and it is just my luck that mine is one!! But at least we have water! (And I am working today!)

Looks like South Carolina's going to be spared!
Looks like my state's going to be spared from a repeat performance of Hurricane Hugo.
Good luck for you folks in NC Outerbanks an Virginia Beach. Hopefully the storm will make a quick right-turn and not cause you too much trouble. My prayer's are with anybody in those areas.

They're saying it's supposed to hit us in the Maritime Provinces of Canada on Saturday. It seems to be taking the same track as Juan. At least I"m home this time, and not in Halifax like Juan. If Earl goes the same way as Juan, it will be downgraded before it hits PEI, but Mom says that they were without power for 3 days that time.

Hallelujah! We finally got electricity back, just as we were leaving our home to go and sleep by Sam's friend.
My fridge and freezer are both in a hot mess!
Thank goodness Fiona didn't even give us a 'hello'!!
Hoping that Gaston continues to behave himself, and leave us alone!
Thanks for all your caring thoughts and prayers.
