Hi there, and good morning from my part of the world.

I am a 34 year old male who has been on dialysis, and waiting for a kidney transplant for 7 years. I live in Canberra, the capital city of Australia.  The love of my life is a small dog named Maxxie, and I have 7 fish - guppies, as yet unnamed.

My kidney's failed as a reslut of IgA Nephropathy, which I discovered I had at the age of 13. Then, right about this time in 1999, my kidney's failed. Before then I had a fantastic and busy life, and a great job which I enjoyed a lot. Little did I know what was ahead of me!

I spent the first 12 months of dialysis on PD.  That' how long it took my medical advisers to realise it was not working - that my membrane was not up to the task.  They were dark days, and of course meant that I had to give up work, and suffer all the financial indignities which go with that.

I changed to haemodialysis, on which I am now relaitvely stable after 6 years.  Although there were many up's and down's!

I now dialyse three times a week at a 'satellite' haemodialysis clinic. I am hoping in the New Year though to move house, and to arrange to have a machine at home. I am back at work (full-time).  I am a policy officer for a health consumer organisation, the peak health consumer organisation in Australia.  Ironically, health policy was my area of expertise even before my kidney's failed.  It was a revelation in many respects to go from policy person to patient, but I now feel it has added an element to the professional me which many of my colleagues will never have.

This is a great idea, and I look forward to posting and to reading others' posts.

Cheers,
ScottieX

She doesn't mean it LITERALLY, Angie. She just means we have a lot of Aussies enough to fill a "section" like in a stadium.  ::)
