My husband is doing PD, and the nutritionist told him he MUST start getting more protein, his chart shows that his protein levels are steadily going down down-----now, the problem is, he also has heart disease, and he stopped eating red meat years ago, and he really doesn't eat much meat anyway, which is great for the heart thing, but not for this------------he hates protein powders and bars and drinks, and quite frankly he doesn't have much of an appetite at all, and he is nauseous a lot, so forcing down a bar or drink could just result in throwing it back up------------any suggestions? I think he needs about 120 grams a day, I just wondered if any of you have this same problem, and what do you do about it?
Thank you:)

Your appetite goes up and down with pd. I went off red meat altogether, i ate a lot of chicken though ! Drinks are horrible ! Just look at stuff on the net and see what is high in protein ,then compare it with allowances on a renal diet  :2thumbsup;

I cant stand the supplements either, they are so nasty. I did however get to try a lemon cookie that was protien cookie,it was delicious! but my insurance didnt cover it, and its expensive. Ill see if i can find out what that was called.
I have alot of trouble with meat, i hate chewing meat, so my protien has been an issue from the begining now its terrible. i have to have shots twice a week for my anemia.
Its very hard. And here lately I havent been hungry at all, so my meals have been nothing but meat and bananas because thats all i can hold and i need the protien and potassuim!
i hope we can find some good ideas!
ive been munching on nuts during my drain time, it seems to help with the nausea, and its protien!

Well, if not eating much meats and not taking protein supplement, an alternative option is beans and plant protein.

Beans are high in phos and potassium, but a small portion wouldn't hurt.

I drink Chocolate High Protein Boost.  I am not much of a meat eater and have come to enjoy the taste of the Boost.  It is also a good chocolate fix.

This might sound a bit harsh but he needs to force down some kind of protein source to stay alive.  They say that more D people die when their protein/albumin levels are low.

I'm with rerun.  Eggs of one sort or another every morning for breakfast.  Sometimes egg salad or hard boiled eggs for lunch too  Low calorie, high protein and easy for all meals.

I'm not a big fan of WHEY drinks but there are so many new companies and if you go to a supplements store (where gym people go) the selection is tremendous. I like Gaspari Myofusion. It mixes really well and comes in many flavours. I prefer vanilla then I can add bananas, berries, mandarins, pineapple, peanut butter etc to change up the flavour. It really doesn't taste like whey. I know there are some that taste like Ass!!
There's also Casein protein which is a slow release powder. It's best taken at night.

And I forgot all about Greek yogourt - 1/2 cup has 20 g protein. I know, you're going to say PHOSPHORUS but it seems to go hand in hand with protein.

When using various powders and drinks, be very careful about potassium and phosphorus content--both of which are not always listed.  You also need to see what vitamins and other micro-nutrients are included, so not to have too much for a dialysis patient.

And brands do change their formulas without notice.

I used to drink MuscleMilk in the ready-to-drink 17 bottle (32 grams of protein).
When I first used it, potassium was about 350 mg for the bottle.  Now it's over 1,000 mg of potassium!

Forewarned is forearmed.

PS: And my Extra Creamy Whey Ice Cream dosen't taste like a whey drink.
It tastes like ice cream!

Try it, You'll like it!

I'm working on a recipe for high-protein brownies (and blondies). I'll post it here once I've got it worked out and tested.  :cookie;

I've  never  been  a  great  meat  eater.  When  I  started  PD,  nurses  kept  telling  me  to  eat  more  meat.  I  kept  saying  YUCK!!!!!      I  tried a    protein  powder   (hormel  propass  protein  powder) it had  such a  nasty  taste  to  it, I  stopped  using  it,  and  for  months  after  I  could  still taste  it  and  it  would turn my stomach.   I've  tried  protein  drinks,  yuck!!
My  fav is  balance   mocha chip  protein  bar.  It  doesn't  feel like I'm  eating  a  protein  bar.
I  have a   list of  protein  bars  my  dietitian  gave  me,  I'll  start  a  thread  with them.

Take  care!!

Protein Shot by Body Fortress
Comes in a test tube-like container.
$2 each at WalMart in the pharmacy department with body building supplements and diet drinks
26 grams of protein
no fat grams
Made from whey protein.

I buy them by the box.  Honestly, they taste like fruit-flavored cheeseburgers, but it is a shot and quick to swallow.
