Photo is Jenna - after Disneyland - 1988

WWW
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:44:06 AM »

We saw Jenna's nephrologist yesterday and he looked over her labs. He said that the fact that her kidney function has remained unchanged since January (creatinine now at 3.39) - that it's been steady since the treatment for rejection - and her other levels all look good - he surprised us by saying, "Barring an infection or dehydration, there's a good chance this kidney could possibly last 5 more years." OMG I couldn't believe it! Did he say YEARS?? He said, "So hold off getting the fistula surgery for now, let's see how the next few months go." Jenna and I got in the car and I said "Wow, isn't it great to get a good report card?" and she burst into tears. "Mom, this is why I haven't gotten a job or anything else, I thought it was over." We both had a good cry. This was the first really good news since her rejection episode. Of course, I know none of this is a guarantee, but the kidney Patrice gave her is one tough bean! The Brave Little Kidney!

No news like good news.

And it sounds like it surprised you and Jenna greatly.  May it go five years then many more after that.  I am glad you got this news instaed of news youd rather not hear.

Prayers for Jenna and her kidney.

Okarol..  I had my first bout of rejection a year to the day after the transplant.  That kidney went through 3 bouts all together, and lasted me 8 years.  If it's caught early enough, rejection isn't the end either.  Hopefully that is the only bout she has, and her kidney lasts her many, many more years than just 5.

It sounds like the treatment worked wonders.
It is very possible her kidney could last for quite a while with appropriate care.
I hope Jenna can now feel like she is able to make some plans for her immediate future. All she can do is her best to try and prolong the life of her kidney.

Wonderful news!  I'll bet you two did have a good cry!  And who knows, it could be even longer than 5 years.  No one knows for sure.  I was diagnosed in 1993 or 1994 and I was told by my nephrologist that I would be on dialysis sooner than later.  Well, my little native kidneys just kept on going and going and as you all know I didn't get my transplant until Nov 2008 and never did do dialysis.  I was close though.

Here's to that awesome kidney/gift from Patrice!    :beer1;    May it live a long life so that Jenna can live a long life free of dialysis!   :2thumbsup;   Congratulations on the great news!

yeah, I've got a tear or two here reading this. Absolutely nothing is guaranteed, but that the bean has gone SIX MONTHS staying pretty stable is a really good indication that all things being equal it could last a lot longer than you've both expected. About time you guys caught a break. This is great for Jenna and hope it gives her inspiration to take herself off hold and get on with things - because as we all know dialysis doesn't preclude having a job or a life etc.

Really good to read this news!!!  :yahoo; :yahoo; :yahoo; :yahoo; :clap; :clap; :clap;
