hello my name is helen mo rgan i am 36 years old and have 3 children 18, 17 and 6 im married. at the age of 13 i was diagnosed with hencoche scherlene purpura and told i would never have kids, they sure got that wrong lol in july last year i started pd dialysis being told it was the best option for someone my age and lifestyle,  anyway after 4 repositioning ops and a great deal of painfull dialysis sessions i couldnt take much more and decided that i wanted hemodialysis, even tho im terrified of needles but with the way thepd was going it seems like a better option. i had a fistula made in march 10 and manged to stay off dialysis till this week, i was very ill monday and had to have the hemo, and here i am now, on the second day of dialyisis and thinking omg this is going to take over my life. with a exceptional fear of needles and hoping i will start to not be so scared and not feel so  pee,ed off . i know its not the end of the world but it sure feels hard to adjust, im one of the lucky ones as of yet i dont have fluid restriction, please tell me the needles get easier  and you start to adjust xxxx this site is going to be great for me as im a bit of a whinge lol xxx

You're not Welsh by any chance, are you (Morgan)?

So glad you've found us and that you got off PD if it wasn't working out for you. I did not spend long enough on dialysis to be able to answer your adjustment questions, but the consensus seems to be that it does get easier. I'm sure others will reassure you where I lack the experience.

Hi Helen and welcome to IHD.  You must be terrified.  The good news is you should start to feel better.  Just remember how you felt Monday and then rationalize that is why you have to go to dialysis.  You need your blood ckeaned to live.  It takes awhile to adjust.  The needles go in and then you are fine.  They don't hurt the whole time.  I hate needles but now I don't panic until they are going for it.  I bite my finger and look away.  BIG BABY but I don't care.  I use the lidocane shots which sting but I 'd rather have that.  I can't tell you the needles are a breeze, but I do it.  You would think by now they would have thought of something better.

Come to IHD for the truth.  We are here for you.

Hi, Helen, welcome to the group.  You might try Emla or Topicaine to ease the pain of the needles.  Sorry to hear the PD didn't work out for you.  I've been on PD 7 years and I love it (well, as much as anyone can "love" dialysis).

WElcome to our community, Helen!  Glad that you found this community.  And I can tell you that it all gets better.  I have been on hemodialysis now for nearly 5 years, and it is going much better now than when I started.  We hate dialysis, but it is life-support for many of us!  You have found a excellent place for information and support. In fact, you have found a genuine caring and sharing family    Just take advantage of all this site has to offer, and keep posting.

I swear by Emla cream.  I love the stuff.  I put it on about an hour to an hour and a half before I'm hooked up.  I just spread it over the site and cover with a tegaderm.  Then I don't feel the needles when they go in.  And Rerun, I look away too, even though I can't feel it, but I do look back to make sure there is blood going through the line
