Bilateral Nephrectomy- anybody had one?

I know this is the transplant section but I didn't know where to put it.

I've got polycystic kidneys and will consider having them removed- once I stop weeing that is, I still pass up to 3 litres (of crystal clear fluid) a day.
But they are getting bigger- about 5lbs each now, and I want them out while I'm still relatively young (33) and they're still manageable. 

Anybody had any massive nephrectomies?

I know the doctors won't remove the kidneys unless it the things are starting to get dangerous due to their size.  This is as the nephrectomy comes with its associated risks and in their language "add to the morbidity percentage".

I wish you to get a new kidney ASAP; the good news is that it won't be affected by the polycystic disease. This is because your condition triggers the "self destruction" of the kidneys and/or the liver only in your own organs.

Our member whiskeyfrank had a PKD bilateral nephrectomy last year, and he apparently had two of the largest kidneys the doctor had ever seen. He wrote about his experience if you want to look up his posts, and I believe he also keeps a personal blog.

I am in fact American, but my husband is Welsh - extremely. 'Cariad' is, of course, his standard nickname for me and the kids.

You're the first person here to notice this. Gwyn will be so delighted. I saw in one of your other posts that you speak Cymraeg. My kids understand it fluently (but don't speak it ) and I can follow most of what Gwyn says to them.
