Im convinced ! From the very very start along time ago , everything to do with dialysis has been a rough ride and today has just about taken the biscuit. How i havent crumbled before now i just dont know ..i think i go into zombie coping mode or something ? Well today i was going for my mapping for my fistula . Having one done is a straight forward day procedure done under a local. OOOOOOh nooooooo not for me ! I have to have major surgery under a general, they are going to cut me from elbow to armpit , not only do they have to make a fistula but they have to LIFT it as well ! I really , really do give up ! Came home fed up, faced with this news only to get a phone call as i walked through the door, oh we forgot to mention ...not only do we have to do that but we have to take your line out of your neck and put it in the opposite side , you cant have a line and a fistula on the same side.  I give up , i just give up , i dont know what else to say !  :waiting;

Oh Lord!!!!!....

Poor KS..... You've REALLY been through the mill, haven't you???.....

On the plus side, if you have this done soon, it'll be done and dusted... You'll be able to dialyse easier, and you'll be able to enjoy your new garden, with a little bit of better weather (hopefully).... The idea of the elbow to armpit sounds daunting, and that was the plan for Mum.... When they operated though, they put the fistula into her wrist... It was an unmitigated disaster!... If I could get hold of the person who did that, I'd be shoving dialysis needles up their.... >:D...  Well, you get the picture!!!!!.... Fistula never worked properly... From the people I've spoken to, the one in the upper arm seems to work much better!...

I hope everything goes very well....

I had that surgery done to both arms, finally the one in my upper left arm works, 3 surgeries on the right arm, 2 surgeries on the left.   :grouphug; :grouphug; getting it done all at once is the way to go.

UK is totally strange. My cath was on my right and so is my fistula. When they started using my arm,they used one needle and one side of the cath.

Now I have a great neph and an excellant vascular surgen. If this couldn't have been done,they wouldn't have done it.

I do believe UK is still in dark ages where dialysis is concerned.

Jenna also had vein mapping done recently and the recommendation was the same. They need to lift a vein from deep in her arm to create the fistula. They wanted to schedule it right away but she needs her wisdom teeth out now so will do the fistula surgery later.

1986: kidney failure at 19 years old, cause unknown
PD for a year, in-centre haemo for 4 years
Transplant 1 lasted 21 years (Lucy: 1991 - 2012), failed due to Transplant glomerulopathy
5 weeks Haemo 2012
Transplant 2 (Maggie) installed Feb 13, 2013, returned to work June 17, 2013 average crea was 130, now is 140.
Infections in June / July, hospital 1-4 Aug for infections.

Over the years:  skin cancer; thyroidectomy, pneumonia; CMV; BK; 14 surgeries
Generally glossy and happy.

Any reason why they can't keep your cath in the same side as the fistula? My graft is in the same side as my catheter, when I asked my vascular surgeon if he'd have to move it when he put it in he said no it will be fine, and it still works fine.

august 24, 2009, was suppose to have access placement but instead was admited to hospital for low potassium
august 25, 2009, access placement
January 16, 2010 thrombectomy was done on access

I think that at one point or another every dialysis patient has felt this. Some times it feels like it will never end until they've cut you up from head to toe.

Hang in there, once you're dialysing regularly hopefully things will settle down for you and (dare I say it?) you might start to feel a little better!

All i was told was they need to be in opposite sides to give the fistula the best chance !

Thanks for the well wishes, but ive been doing dialysis for over 6 years now ! , so i would like to think im dialysing regularly  ..hehe !

My lines were in the right side of my chest and my fistula is in my right arm! Now maybe it's that your cicumstances are different because the vein needs lifting but if not then somebody has told you porkies!

No news at the moment , waiting to see if i can go back to the surgeon and get him to look at my left arm instead. I am left handed, but somehow i will manage if it saves all this messing with my right arm !

I would say well I know people that have their catheter in the same side as their fistula and see what he has to say to that.
