If life weren't bizarre enough...

...now I have to worry about volcano ash.
Yes, volcano ash.
My son is here from London on his Easter break. He is supposed to go home Saturday. I hear today that flights in and out of the UK have been cancelled through Friday because of severely decreased visibility due to ash spewed during a volcano eruption in Iceland. It has drifted into UK airspace. No one is quite sure yet when Heathrow will be able to bring in international flights, but hopefully it will be by Saturday/Sunday AM.
Life is just weird.

Oh boy it is always something huh.
I hope all clears up and he can take off on schedule. If not you get some extra time with your son.
I Remember back in 1980 April 19 when i was living in Seattle Mt St. Helens blew her top. Same deal no flights day turned to night and you couldnt even drive your cars cause the ash would foul up the carburetors.

I do remember Mt St Helens, but living in Texas, I didn't experience much of it. But I do remember hearing stories about gorgeous sunsets caused by the way the ash affected the light. That must have been something to see.

It was May 18, 1980 because it made Spokane dark by noon. It was a weird day.
At least you may get to keep him a few days longer.

I get the feeling that the earth is really pissed at us. Earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis; I'm stocking up on water wings just in case!

Seriously, have you been watching the news? Air traffic control in Europe has never seen anything quite like this. They don't expect to start allowing planes in/out of the UK until noon tomorrow CST at the earliest. And there will be loads of families trying to return from the Easter Break this weekend (like my son will be trying to do)! Oh man...I can see us spending hours at O'Hare on Saturday...

Good Call Rerun
I have a Seattle Times paper from that day still...
I also have Ash from St. Helens. Sadly i Paid for it about 6 years ago on our last trip to Seattle. Could haver had tons of it for free after the eruption but at the time it was just a nuisance.
MM
Maybe you should wait a full day after they start letting planes take off just to avoid all the crowds and confusion that is sure to happen.

Does he
have
to be back in the UK - for the new school term/work on Monday - or could you take this opportunity to spend a few more days with him? My cousin's husband is stuck in Rome (oh, the horror!) and the earliest they've told him he can reschedule his flight will be for next Thursday. Still, with it being in Europe he can (and probably will) just share a hire car with colleagues over the weekend.
I hope that your weekend isn't too chaotic due to this.

Well, he is supposed to go back to college on Tuesday for the new term, so yes, he has to be back, but if the planes can't fly, then he won't be back; it's that simple. He is mildly autistic, and despite the fact that he has made this trip since he was 4 months old, in the past 6 years he has flown as an unaccompanied minor. This is actually the last flight he will take with that status because by the summer when he next flies over, he will be too old. I think he could probably handle it all on his own, but if he got on a flight that ended up being diverted somewhere, well, he might not be able to cope with that unless someone took the time to sit down with him and explain exactly what was going on. I'm sure everything will resolve itself eventually, but it could be a while. It's just really bizarre...I just have to laugh.

I know y'all are just dying for an update...
My son's flight has just been cancelled; there are no British Airways flights flying tomorrow, Saturday. I get more time with my punkin!

Might as well take advantage of the weird things you can't control! Enjoy the extra time!

look at it this way, there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it. nature has the upper hand on this one. enjoy your time together.
