All week long I've add sinus headache and coughing.  By Thursday I went home early from work because I felt nausea.  Thursday night I ran a fever 99.6 and the coughing got worst.  My head hurt so bad it feels like my eyes were going to pop out of my head.  I went to see my family doctor on Friday.  He said I didn't have the flu but a sinus infection.  He prescribed antibiotics.  I asked him about my coughing because chest/throat/head aches.  He mentioned to me an old timey remedy.  Rock & Rye...has anyone heard of it?  My husband and I dropped off the prescription and went straight to the ABC (Alcohol Beverage Company) store.  I was told to pour 1/2 shot of Rock & Rye with 1tsp of honey & 1tsp of lemon juice.  Drink right before bed.

I've never heard of this remedy until now, but I tell you...it got rid of my cough.  I slept so good that night and by morning, the cough was pretty much gone.  Amazing.

Oh my gosh lol. My best friend and I drank that a few times when we were like 17. We thought it was cool because we were "rockers" (in our our minds lol) and the name sounded cool. Oh...what memories. I had a sinus infection years ago and it felt like a truck had run over me. Hope you start feeling better soon!

Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

Half-step
Mississippi Uptown Toodleloo
Hello, baby, I'm gone, good-bye
Half a cup of rock and rye
Farewell to you old southern sky

boy, i would love to find out if this was OK for dialysis patients (i think I'm seeing you have a new kidney and not on dialysis?? )  My hubby gets such a nasty cough sometimes as well as sleep issues.  This would take care of both in one shot......(or 1/2 shot..  ;) )   I guess i should ask his Dr but I'm sure glad it worked for you... Hope it's something my hubby could use "when needed" instead of stinken cough syrup that they perscribe...

It's not amazing at all.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant.  And as such, it depresses the cough reflex in the brain (among other brain functions).  Any type of alcoholic drink will do.  Codeine works similarly.

In fact, Vicks Nyquil (a popular OTC cold remedy) contains alcohol.

That alcohol relieves coughing spasms and helps you sleep was known for centuries; the "hot toddy" was a popular folk remedy for colds.

The problem with drinking alcohol is that it's a diuretic, which makes you more dehydrated, which can make the cold worse.

I have heard of Whiskey, lemon juice and honey.  So maybe any whiskey would do.

Rerun shall we all try it, and get happy. You could even try it if you haven't got a cold. Lets go for it!
