Hello, my name is Judy I'm from Canada and last month I celebrated my 16th kidney anniversary.  I Lived a completely normal healthy life until I became pregnant. 17 years ago I gave birth to identical twin boys 2 months premature by Cesarean section, after spending 2 months in hospital due to a high risk pregnancy, only to find my life immediately changed.  Right after the birth I became very ill and after many tests the doctors told me I had an inflammation of the kidneys.  Not knowing anything about kidney disease I thought this was just something that could be cured with antibiotic's, boy was I wrong! A month after the birth my babies and I finally got to go home and welcome them to the outside world.  Well, I had 2 weeks with them at home before I got the shocking news I was to return in hospital to start dialysis as soon as possible because I was then at a 10% kidney function.  So a seclavin line catheter was inserted for immediate dialysis with surgery to follow not long after for my fistula. 2 Weeks after starting dialysis I developed a severe bleeding ulcer, which I was told caused in part by prednizone and stress.  When I started vomiting coffee grounds and was being unhooked from dialysis, after only 10 minutes of being connected I knew something was seriously wrong.  At this point I was more scared than ever.  I was rushed to intensive care and an mg tube quickly inserted in my nose. I had no idea what was happening but of course the medical staff knew exactly what it was.  During a 24 hour period I had been given 26 pints of blood, as fast as it was going in it was coming out, from all area's that it could.  Surgery was out of the question for many hours due to my potassium being too high.  As I laid in a semiconscious state I could hear a Minister standing over me with my husband saying "shall i read her last rights"? And I recall a bit later saying to my husband "take good care of our babies".  So after many hours of dialyizing the successful surgery was finally able to take place.  After being on dialysis a year I received a "second chance" at life from my sister, when she gave me one of her kidneys.  A gift I will cherish forever.  I know what may lye ahead for me some day, but at least I will be a lot more knowledgable this time.

Hi Angie, yes I'm the same Judy from your site. Thanks for your welcome.  Have been looking around lots in here and looks to be a good site, lots to read and learn. It was great seeing the pictures of members to put a face to names.
