Transplant vs. no transplant

I see many of you posting that you have chosen not to have a transplant.  I am very curious why you would not have a transplant if it is an option for you.

I tried to donate for my wife to have a transplant but, first off, we don't match.  Then the transplant coordinator told me that if I donated to whoever they had for me to match, that Denise would be moved up and receive the next available cadaver donation that matched her.  I convinced them to do a cross swap.  In other words, I would donate to someone that had a donor to donate for Denise.  That way she would receive a kidney from a living donor.

We found a swap, went through all the tests and they found that I have multiple stones in both kidneys and turned me down as a donor.

My point is, I would do anything I could to get her a transplant because it seems like it is so much better than to be on dialysis.  She has been on 3 day a week hemo 20 years ago.  She got a transplant and kept it 20 years until it failed.  She did PD for 10 months and now we are using nxstage 6 days a week.  By far, the transplant was the best option for her.  What am I missing?

It worked good for your wife and thats fantastic but I guess it's a matter of choice and circumstances.

I understand.  And I am not trying to persuade you to do or not do anything.  I am certain you have your reasons for not wanting a transplant.  If it isn't too personal, I would like to understand why. Like I said, maybe there is something that I am missing. 

 I am pretty new to this site.  If this is a subject that has been discussed elsewhere, perhaps you could point me in the right direction.
