Hi - My name is Bill and I just donated my kidney to my father at RWJUHospital in NJ last week. So obviously I'm not on dialysis, but I met some recipients who just got off it (there were 2 live donors and 5 deceased donors during my stay) and fortunately my dad never had to go on it. 
It's an emotional roller-coasterfor me because I was happy/proud/nervous that I was able to donate for my dad, but there were also others in the other wing who were not recipients yet - and I can't help them anymore - I'm fresh out of kidneys!  The truth is that I did not know very much at all about kidney disease or the options or donation or dialysis about 2 months ago and in these 2 mo.s I've learned a lot! and in the past week at the hospital (really only 3 days) I learned a lot more.
So I think there's got to be more that can be done to turn the 77,000 waiters into the 17,000 recipients (if those #'s are accurate.) But I'm not sure what, exactly - but I bet some of you might...

Bill you are one more educated person on Renal Failure and transplantation.  Spread the word.  You are a good witness.

Thank you for giving your dad a kidney. I am a firm believer in "One healthy kidney for everyone" My daughter, 15 years old, has been on dialysis for 1 1/2 years and I am hoping that she will get a kidney soon. I would give her mine, but it is reserved for my 18 year old daughter who has 20% kidney function since we are blood type A and my younger daughter is blood type B. Rare recessive genetic kidney condition that causes kidneys to fail between the ages of 13 and 19. I never knew anything about kidney disease prior to two of my daughters being diagnosed 2 years ago. You sure learn fast when it is impacting you or a family member.

Diagnosed Nov 2007 with Multiple Myeloma.
By Jan 2008 was in end stage renal failure and on haemodialysis.
Changed to CAPD in April 2008.  Now on PD with a cycler.  Working very part time - teaching music.  Love it.  Husband is Paul (we're both 46), daughter Molly is 13.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

Welcome to our community, Bill! Donors are considered very special people here on IHD.  So you have joined our list of heros!!!  And you are now a part of our IHD family  :grouphug; a wonderful group of sharing and caring people.
I am so pleased that your donating has opened your eyes a bit concerning this renal challenge.
Keep doing whatever you can do to make other people understand a bit.
