Early yesterday afternoon, after a big storm came through, I little baby bird I think it's a Robin have been calling out for its Mom.  The poor thing has been hopping around my yard looking for the Mom.  Now its on my front porch just chirping away.  What should I do?  Should I take it in or just let natur takes it's course?  I hate for the poor thing to die.  Its so cute.

I raised a baby bird once, after it fell from its nest. I would not have taken it in, but some yard workers where I worked brought it in...

I found worms and chopped them up, mixed with oatmeal and a bit of water. Had that bird for months....

We went away for July 4th and the friend who was keeping it had two little boys. One of them got up in the night to pee and left the toilet cover up. That bird flew in the tiolet and drowned. Every one thought I would be heart-broken. And I WAS sad, after I got finished laughing my head off.

OK.  I've been watching this baby bird all morning.  I actually sat on the front porch with the baby bird and it didn't try to run away.  I came an arms length to the bird.  I didn't want to touch it just in case the Mama comes back.  Glad I didn't because the Mama came back 4 times to feed the little bird.  The baby can't fly yet but it tries.  Its still in my front yard and I keep watching it from afar.  Pray the little thing survive and fly away.

Day 3 for this little guy.  He moves around in the grass on my lawn.  My husband is afraid to mow the grass because of this bird.  The Mama constanly feeds the liitle guy.

Now I have a dilemma.  My husband needed to mow the lawn yesterday.  He held off because of the little bird.  You really have to look hard for the baby bird in the grass to find him.  My husband is afraid he will chop him up with the riding lawn mower.  I'm not sure what to do.  We like to keep a clean cut lawn.

This morning my husband and I sat at the front porch drinking our coffee, watching the Mama bird feed the little guy.  The baby bird keeps hopping to a knew location each time.

My husband wants to catch it and place it across the street to another neighbors yard so he can mow the lawn.  I told him "NO" because once the Mama bird realize his been found, she may not come back for it.

Good Grief!

Stopping to smell the bluebonnets

« Reply #7 on: June 07, 2009, 07:57:33 AM »

I think many baby birds walk around on the ground for a few days before they take off. We have blue birds around here that spend about 2 days on the ground hopping around -- parents are usually perched close and watching carefully. Then they learn to fly and take off.

I was afraid that the neighborhood cats would certainly get one bluebird one night so I picked it up with a towel and caged it. I let it out in the morning and the parents still came around to feed it afterwards. That was before I realized how viciously those parents attack cats -- they needed no help from me!  lol

Anyway, I don't think it would be a problem to scoop up the little bird in a box while your hubby cuts the grass and then put him back afterwards. Birds apparently don't have a very sensitive sense of smell. I read this on a website about robins:

"Don't worry about picking up baby birds that have fallen out of the nest when it gets blown out of your tree. Birds don't have a highly developed sense of smell so they will appreciate the helping hand."

Thanks for the advice.  I will tell my husband to scoop up the baby bird so he can cut the grass.  I can't believe how much the little bird has grown in 3 days.  The funny thing about this little guy, he keeps hopping on my front porch and looks at us.

He sounds adorable, RG.  Maybe he thinks of you as his second Mama.

I hope you get to see it when he finally takes off and flies away.

OK. I took some pics but didn't really turn out too good because I didn't want to scare the bird away.

Oh, he is adorable!  I am hoping that the poor little thing is able to fly soon.  He is kind of vulnerable being out of the nest ike that.

Thanks for posting the pictures!

My husband said his going to hold off mowing the grass for a couple of days.  I hope by then, he flies away.  We have to walk carefully on the lawn because when the bird stoop down in the grass, you can't see him.

This morning, he was in the grass and the Mama bird layed beside him.  It was so sweet.  Later in the afternoon, a little black bird came too close and the Mama bird chased it away.

Rg..what a natural adventure.  I have raised baby cockatiels and from what I can tell in the pics it looks like you might be a week or so off from flight.  It doesn't look like baby robin has all of his/her flight feathers yet.  You may want to use the box idea to get your grass mowed.  Good luck to you and the lil fella!

A "week"????  Oh boy...I can't wait a week for this little guy to fly away.  Just told my husband.  He will try to catch it tomorrow and place it in a box while to mows and release it afterwards.

rookie I am glad your hubby is looking after the bird issues (as well as it's mum) because as you know as a transplantee you REALLY need to keep away from birds :( I am sure he(?) will be OK specially if mum is looking after it :)

Richard...funny you said that because my husband has been telling me the same thing to stay away, don't touch the little bird.  I'm assuming because birds carry diseases that may possibly make me sick as a post transplant patient.

No I'm not making this up. Here's an extract I found from a website that sums it up:

Quote
In general, pets are allowed, but again one should check with one’s own physicians. It is usually recommended that transplant recipients should not come in contact with the feces of cats because of the theoretical risk of encountering a dangerous parasite called "Toxoplasma" that can be carried by cats. This means that a cat in the house is okay, but someone else should change the kitty litter. Dogs are usually okay, but allowing the dog to "kiss" should be discouraged. Birds are also known to carry parasites and it is usually recommend that recipients not clean bird cages or hold the bird.
