My husband is on dialysis, he was on Hemo, about 3 years ago, and was able to stop for the last 21/2 years.  He really hates it, but had to go back on as he was becoming very ill.  He has been on for about one month now, and this morning the tech infiltrated his fistula, and his arm swelled up.  This is the first time this has happened to him.  We have been icing it all day.

Welcome.  I'm just learning about these things so I have no answers or comments for you other than welcome and I'm sure someone will have a response.

 :welcomesign; tee. I never let that tech touch my husband again. Ask which tech or nurse has the most experience with new fistula. You'll find lots of information and support here. Tell your husband to also keep his arm elevated along with the ice.  :cuddle;

Sorry that you and your husband have to go through this. There are definitely awesome techs, nurses and doc and awful techs, nurses and docs. Since your husband is at dialysis 3x per week, you will find out quick who is good with him. There are certain techs and nurses that I will not let touch my daughter. Our insurance is paying $25,000-$30,000 per month for dialysis, demand excellent care!

I am glad that you joined the group, great support and very informative.  :grouphug;

Welcome Tee.  I hope there is room for dialysis next time.  It takes a few days for the bruising to decrease.

Look around this site.  It has lots of support for you and your husband.

Hi, Tee.

I am a care giver for my husband, too. At the beginning he was infiltrated a couple times. We trained for doing dialysis at home with NxStage and now I am the only one who sticks him. I have never infiltrated him. Of course, he is quick to tell me if he feels the needle it touching the side of the fistula and I adjust it.

I'm glad you found this site. There is a wealth of combined wisdom and knowledge here.

Welcome to our community, Tee!  So glad that concern for your husband brought you to us.  You must also check out our caregivers section where caregivers and loved ones have their say and support each other.  Our founder Epoman was a big advocate for self-cannulation.  I haven't got to the point where i even want to attempt that.
On the lightsided side, we have our classic post by LifeOnHold (she has since passed) where she categorizes dialysis nurses.  Have a look - http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=66.0
So please keep reading and keep posting.  Particularly, we want to know how your husband's fistula is doing.  Post in the General Discussion and let us know.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I actually just read this today, and shared with my husband, we had a good laugh.  He has names of people at his center for each of those.  Thank You
