Has anyone else ever vomited blood...?  I got up out of bed this morning too fast and ended up throwing up and there was blood in it.. I called my nurse and have an appointment with the Dr. tomorrow morning.  I feel fine.. all my vitals are normal (blood pressure, weight, pulse, temp.) - is this something that happens from time to time with kidney failure or is out of the ordinary?  I googled it but didn't get much of an answer.

Kristi, I hope you go to the doctor tomorrow. Throwing up blood is not normal. Len has very bad GI problems and even when he was on dialysis (6 years) when he threw up there was never any blood. Please take care and let us know what you find out.  You didn't by any chance have something that was red to eat last night, did you?  :cuddle;

It's also possible that you had  a nosebleed.  When did you dialyze last before you went to bed?  did you feel poorly before you went to bed?

Was the blood red, or black and clotty?

I dialyse at night so it was right after I got off the cycler.  The only thing red I had was kool-aid and some tomatoes.. but it was bright red and then a dark brownish color.  It was clotty or anything.  And I've felt fine through all of it - yesterday and today and only threw up once.

I just remembered that I DID tell my fiance I felt like my nose was bleeding in bed last night.. but we checked it and there was nothing.  Could it have just stayed in there and not come out until this morning?

From my experience with internal (stomach) bleeding being an EMT for 15 years...any blood that has mixed with stomach acids looks more like coffee grounds when tossed.  I agree with the nose bleed idea...or perhaps the wretching caused a small vessel in your throat to burst...that has happened to me before.
Always check with your doc where blood is concerned...not something you want to run a quart low!

check out this post of epoman's about Mallory-Weiss - it looks scary, but may not be all that serious.

my guess is that the heparin and being a bit dry caused a nosebleed, and it dripped back into your stomach.  If it continues, talk to your doctor. I would not worry too much.

Based on your question, I am guessing that this is your first experience with vomiting blood. On that basis alone, you need to see the doc.

Glitter mentioned foamy blood - that is potentially lung related and, like she said, demands an emergency room visit.

Yours sounds GI related. Upper GI bleed blood can appear red if it is fresh or coffee grinds like if it has spent some time mixing with stomach contents before coming up. We have experienced both presentations. The first several times put Rolando in the hospital because we didn't understand it. Now we understand - he has gastroparesis and vomits regularly, sometimes frequently which can lead to a bleed. With understanding, we have been able to put a rapid halt to the vomiting and, in turn, the bleed.

For you, don't be scared, but, until you know the cause and how to control it, get a professional opinion.

I take it like the rest of us you are on lots of tablets ?  Do you take anything like Lansaprazole to protect your stomach? , because it does sound like a stomach ulcer ! Its quite common because of all the tablets we take that our stomach lining gets damaged. I would make this your first thing to check (rather than a nosebleed!) Its easily sorted with more tablets!

For peace of mind I would get checked, without any other symptoms I wouldn't worry about it too much but definately let the Doctor take a look.

Saw my Dr. at the PD clinic today and he sent me over to the ER.... they proceeded to poke and prod and shove a tube down my nose to see if any blood would come up (it did not).  Then they made me do an endoscopy like epoman mentioned and they found that my esophagis was a bit irritated (from all the throwing up over the past few months).  So they gave me a prescription for Prilosec and sent me home.. The Dr. mentioned it might be a tear but they didn't find anything to prove that.

I don't think I take any meds that would mess with my stomach... I take Renagel, Bicarb, Renavite and the Epo shot once a week.

Anyways... long day and many annoying / painful tests and it was something pretty simple, blah. The endoscopy actually didn't hurt at all, I was asleep - don't remember going to sleep, don't remember waking up - just kind of found myself in the recovery room - weird stuff.
