Woman Gives Stranger a KidneyApril 1, 2009 05:34 PM
Boise, Idaho -- For those in need of an organ transplant, waiting for a donor can take months, if not years, so now living donors are stepping up. A new website called donors.com has already saved more than 40 patients.
One Boise woman, recently gave one of her kidneys to a stranger. In her case, it was part of a donor pair exchange, where healthy friends and family save the lives of those they're a match for, hoping to secure a match for their own ill loved one.
She saved a 47-year-old mother whom she got to meet using a webcam.
"She, you know, was just very, very grateful someone gave up their kidney. And she looked at me through the webcam and said you know there's just no words I can't even tell you," said Dolores Macias, a living donor.
Macias donated to benefit 27-year-old, Rosalie Schmalz of Boise, who's still waiting for a match. Having one less kidney barely impacts Macias life.
She hopes others will considering becoming living donors by contacting Intermountain Donor Services or visiting donors.com.
